Golden Eagle Baseball Squad Starts 0-3 at Russ Matt Invitational

(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Baseball team is 0-3 after three games at the Russ Matt Invitational in Auburndale and Winter Have, Fla. The Golden Eagles dropped a non-conference doubleheader to Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) foe Concordia University, St. Paul (CSP) on Saturday, March 12. The Golden Bears took game one 20-0 before taking the nightcap 21-3. On Sunday, March 13, U of M, Crookston dropped a hard-fought 7-3 game to the University of
Missouri-St. Louis (UMSL).

Concordia University, St. Paul – 20
University of Minnesota, Crookston – 0

The Golden Bears rode an eight-run second inning on their way to the 20-0 shut-out victory. J.T. Schneider went 4-4 with three runs batted in (RBI) and three runs scored and two doubles. Bryan Lippincott went 3-5 with four RBI and four runs scored and a double and a triple. Andy Fagley threw the complete game allowing no runs on five hits, striking out six to get the complete-game, shut-out victory. Josh Brehmer (Fr, SS, Roseville, Minn.) had two hits for the Golden Eagles.

Concordia University, St. Paul – 21
University of Minnesota, Crookston – 3

U of M, Crookston opened up a 3-0 lead in the first inning but was plagued by nine errors as the Golden Bears took the nightcap 21-3. Jon Stockton led CSP going 2-3 with three RBI and three runs scored and two doubles. Lippincot added two hits, two RBI and two runs scored. Chris Peterson threw five innings allowing three runs on five hits while striking out seven to get the win. P.J. Zwach (Jr, 3B, St. Paul, Minn.) and Brehmer added two more hits for the Golden Eagles.

University of Missouri-St. Louis - 7
University of Minnesota, Crookston – 3

The Tritons opened up a 4-0 lead after one inning and held on for a 7-3 hard-fought victory. Trailing 5-0 in the second inning, U of M, Crookston cut the lead to 5-3 off an RBI double by Alex Gregor (Sr, RHP/1B, Shakopee, Minn.) and a two-run homerun by Ben Lazzari (Jr, RHP/OF, Shakopee, Minn.). UMSL added two more runs in the top of the eighth inning to secure the victory. U of M, Crookston's Nick Kelzer (Fr, RHP, Delano, Minn.) was solid on the mound rebounding from a four-run first inning to throw seven innings allowing five runs (four earned) on nine hits while striking out four. Kelzer held the Tritons scoreless for five straight innings. Taylor Kollman (Fr, RHP/OF, Glenwood, Minn.) added two hits for the Golden Eagles. Zach Standefer threw six innings allowing three runs on four hits while striking out seven to get the victory.

U of M, Crookston falls to 0-5 overall. The Golden Eagles return to action at the Russ Matt Invitational with a single nine-inning game against Kentucky Wesleyan College on Monday, March 14. First pitch is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. (CST) in Auburndale, Fla.

The University of Minnesota, Crookston is an NCAA Division II Institution and a member of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC). The Golden Eagle Equestrian team is a member of the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA).
