(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston hosted Upper Iowa University tonight at Lysaker Gymnasium in the first game of an NSIC weekend double-header.
Laurie Tyson (C, 6-1, So., Rosemount, Minn.) grabbed 11 rebounds including five offensive boards in the first half to help hold UIU to just 22 points on 32% shooting. UMC shot a strong 52.9% from the field and 40% from long range to take the halftime lead 44-22. Minnesota, Crookston led by as many as 31 points in the second half and went on to the 80-58 victory.
Jamie Zelinsky (G, 5-11, Sr., Brooklyn Park, Minn.) led the Golden Eagles offensively with 15 points. She was 6-10 from the field and 2-3 from long range.
Bri Zabel (F, 6-0, Sr., Northfield, Minn.) and
Brittani Wiese (G, 5-7, So., Albertville, Minn.) each tallied 12 points in the win.
Gracie Bruzek (G, 5-3, Fr., Alexandria, Minn.) dished a game-high four assists. Tyson led UMC in rebounding for the sixth consecutive game. Tonight she pulled down a career-high 16 boards which tied her for fourth all-time in rebounds in a game. As a team, the Golden Eagles earned 24 points off turnovers, 17 second chance points and 34 points off the bench.
Upper Iowa was led by Lana Otting's game-high 16 points. She was 7-10 from the field and grabbed four rebounds. Chelsea Garcia followed Otting with 15 points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.
Minnesota, Crookston advances to 12-11 overall and 9-10 in the NSIC. Upper Iowa falls to 1-22 overall and 1-18 in conference play. UMC returns to the court tomorrow to host Winona State. Tip-off is set for 4:05 p.m.
