Zelinsky Breaks All-Time Golden Eagle Scoring Record in Loss to Minnesota Duluth

Laurie Tyson
(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston hosted the University of Minnesota Duluth this evening in a battle of two seventh place teams in the NSIC.  It was a historic first half for the Golden Eagles as two team members each reached career milestones.  Jamie Zelinsky (G, 5-11, Sr., Brooklyn Park, Minn.) set the all-time Golden Eagle Women's Basketball scoring mark of 1,642 points previously held by Karna Plaine (2002-2006). Zelinsky broke the record with a good jumper with one second remaining in the first half. Bri Zabel (F, 6-0, Sr., Northfield, Minn.) scored her 1,000th career point in a Golden Eagle uniform with a basket at the 17:47 mark of the first half. Zabel has been with the Golden Eagles for three seasons after transferring from Florida Gulf Coast.  Even with the scoring milestones, UMD led at half time 38-29 behind a good defensive effort holding UMC to 11-33 (33.3%) from the field and going on an 11-2 run to finish the first half.  The Golden Eagles battled back during the second half to take a 50-49 lead with 9:27 remaining but it wasn't enough as the Bulldogs went on to outscore UMC 29-15 the rest of the way and take the contest 78-65.

The Golden Eagles were led by Laurie Tyson (C, 6-1, So., Rosemount, Minn.) who narrowly missed a double-double with a team high 13 points and nine rebounds. It is the fifth consecutive game that Tyson has led UMC in rebounding.  Bri Zabel finished second on the team with 12 points while Jamie Zelinsky scored 11 points and collected five rebounds.  Brittani Wiese (G, 5-7, So., Albertville, Minn.) led UMC with five assists and tied a season-high of four steals while scoring nine points.

Kelsey Hewitt led the Bulldogs with 19 points and 11 rebounds to collect the double-double.  Katrina Newman scored a game high 21 points.  Lindsay Miller scored 17 points and collected eight rebounds.  Courtney Doucette rounded out the leading scorers for UMD with 10 points.  Shelly Stemper had 10 rebounds.

With the win, UMD improves to 10-8 in NSIC play and 12-10 overall.  UMC falls to 8-10 in the conference and 11-11 overall.  The Golden Eagles return to the court on February 18 and 19 to host Upper Iowa and Winona State University. The games are set for 6 p.m. and 4 p.m. and will be carried on Midcontinent Cable.
