Box Score (Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Men's Basketball team matched up tonight against the Bemidji State University (BSU) Beavers at Lysaker Gymasium. Both teams were 0-1 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) games this season and were looking for their first conference victories of the season. The Beavers took an early first half lead and held onto it for the entire game defeating the Golden Eagles 69-44.
U of M, Crookston opened the game with a fast paced tempo but turned over the ball three times in the first four minutes of the game. BSU capitalized on the early turnovers and led by as many as 18 points in the first half. The Beavers lived off of the long ball shooting 62.5% (5-8) from beyond the three-point ark. The Golden Eagles 33.3% (6-18) first half field goal percentage helped BSU end the half with a 38-20 lead.
The Golden Eagles came out for the second half with a great deal of energy and started playing a tight zone defense to try and knock the Beavers off their rhythm. However, BSU quickly reestablished their offense and built on the lead they created in the first half. U of M, Crookston's efforts seemed to pay off for a while in the second half as they went on a 13-3 run. The Golden Eagles kept fighting and narrowing the gap only to have the Beavers answer back and widen the lead to end the game with a final score of 69-44.
Akeem Cubie (6-6, Sr, G/F, Minneapolis, Minn.) and
Jacolby Anderson (6-1, Sr, G, Lancaster, Tex.) both scored double digits in tonight's game. Cubie scored 11 points (4-7) while Anderson added ten (8-8 from the free throw line). The Golden Eagle's also shot an impressive 12 for 13 from the free throwline as a team.
BSU's balanced attack saw nine players score. James Ellisor led all scorers with 19 points (6-12) and six rebounds. Mason Walters scored 12 points (5-10) while David Berthene added ten points (3-5).
The Beavers improve to 6-2 overall and 1-1 in the NSIC. U of M, Crookston falls to 3-2 overall and 0-2 in the NSIC.
The Golden Eagles return to action on Tuesday, December 6 with a non-conference game against Mayville State University in Crookston, Minn. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Lysaker Gymnasium.
