Box Score (Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Women's Basketball team opened the 2011-12 season in Lysaker Gymnasium this evening with a non-conference game against Mayville State. The Golden Eagles took a 10 point lead into the half and exploded in the second half outscoring Mayville 47-21. Minnesota, Crookston led by 36 points with 2:30 remaining and held that lead with an 87-51 victory.
The first half started off well for UMC. The Golden Eagles seemed to have the edge on Mayville State for the majority of the first session. Brittany Wiese (G, 5-7, Jr., Albertville, Minn.) was the leader on offense scoring 11 points. After starting out the game tied 5-5, UMC went on a 15-5 run that ended with 8:32 left in the first half. The run was made possible by UMC's solid defense, which came mostly from their fifteen points off of turnovers. The first half ended with a Mayville state free-throw to bring the score to 40-30 (UMC).
Megan Eul (F, 5-10, Sr., Rosemount, Minn.) started off the second half with a layup to bring the score to 42-30 (UMC). UMC's offense didn't slow down as the team went on a 24-5 run. The Golden Eagles relentless defense, led by the quick feet of
Brittani Wiese and Cienna Walker (G, 5-10, Fr., Ajax, Ontario) continued to cause problems for the Mayville State offense, expanding their lead from 10 to a 36 point victory at the end of the game.
Laurie Tyson (C, 6-1, Jr., Rosemount Minn.) made her presence in the paint known while she was all over the boards recording a team high 10 rebounds.
Eul led all players in the contest with 21 points. She was 6-10 from the field and 9-10 from the free-throw line. Wiese followed Eul with 19 points. Wiese was 5-11 from the field and 9-10 from the charity stripe. She also tied a game-high with four assists. Tyson led all players with 10 rebounds (2 offensive, 8 defensive). The Golden Eagle defense forced 27 Comets turnovers and turned those into 31 points.
Mayville State was led by Angela Tauer's 12 points. She was 2-3 from the field and 8-11 from the line. Megan Groen grabbed seven rebounds while Kay Laforet dished four assists.
Minnesota, Crookston is 1-0 on the season. Mayville State falls to 6-3. The Golden Eagles travel to Valley City State University on Tuesday, November 22. The Golden Eagles and Vikings will square off at 7 p.m. The NSIC season-opener is scheduled for Friday, December 2 at the University of Minnesota, Crookston. The Golden Eagles will host the Bulldogs of Minnesota Duluth at 6 p.m.
