Golden Eagle Women’s Basketball Opens at Home on Friday Against Mayville State

(Crookston, Minn.)- The University of Minnesota, Crookston Women's Basketball team opens the 2011-12 regular season at home this Friday, November 18 against Mayville State University in a non-conference contest. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. in Lysaker Gymnasium.
 
The Golden Eagles had an exhibition game in Grand Forks against the University of North Dakota on November 2. The two teams combined for eight lead changes and UMC led by as many as five points with 9:44 remaining in the game. North Dakota put on the press defense to slow the Golden Eagle offense and forced crucial turnovers toward the end of the game to rally back to take the 62-56 victory. Junior Brittani Wiese (G, 5-7, Jr., Albertville, Minn.) led the Golden Eagles and tied a game-high with 22 points. She was 9-17 from the field and a perfect 3-3 from the free-throw line. She added five rebounds and tied a game-high five steals in the contest. Megan Eul (F, 5-10, Sr., Rosemount, Minn.) earned the only double-double of the game with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Eul tied Wiese with five steals. Laurie Tyson (C, 6-1, Jr., Rosemount, Minn.) tied Eul with 10 rebounds and led players with three blocked shots. Minnesota, Crookston as a team shot 44.4% from the field and 86.7% from the charity stripe.
 
The Comets are currently 6-2 overall this season. Mayville State is coming off back to back losses to Viterbo University and Purdue University- Calumet. Hailey Longtin leads Mayville State averaging 16.6 points/game. She leads the team in minutes per game and is third on the team with 32 total rebounds.
 
Minnesota, Crookston travels to Valley City State University on Tuesday, November 22. The Golden Eagles and Vikings will square off at 7 p.m. The NSIC season-opener is scheduled for Friday, December 2 at the University of Minnesota, Crookston. The Golden Eagles will host the Bulldogs of Minnesota Duluth at 6 p.m.
