Nick Meseck heads into his fourth season as head coach for the University of Minnesota Crookston volleyball program in 2025. He is in his fifth season with the program after serving as an assistant coach for the Golden Eagles in 2021.
In 2024, coach Meseck led the team to their best record since 2016 with a 7-19 record marking his best season with the program. The recruiting class of 2023 continued to show promise as Kailee Waasdorp becomes the program leader for digs/set with 4.895. Off the court, the Golden Eagles had 4 athletes in Madison Carsten (Wadena, Minn.), Bailey Schaefer (Brandon, Minn.), Kailee Waasdorp (West Fargo, N.D.), and Emma Malek (Plainfield, Ill.) named to the NSIC All-Academic Team of Excellence. Minnesota Crookston started 2-0 on the season for the first time since 2014, when the Golden Eagles started 6-0.
In 2023, the Golden Eagles won four matches and took sets from a pair of top-10 teams in Concordia-St. Paul and Southwest Minnesota State. The set won against the Golden Bears was the first set won against the nine-time National Champions since 2018. The Golden Eagles had five freshmen make an impact in 2023. One of these freshman was Kaillee Waasdrop who finished the season 2nd in program history for digs with 38 in one game (vs. UMary 9/23/23). Senior Mara Weisensel (New Ulm, Minn.) was named to the 2023 Academic All-District® Volleyball teams, selected by College Sports Communicators. In addition, the Golden Eagles had Bailey Schaefer (Jr., Brandon, Minn.), Mara Weisensel (Sr., New Ulm, Minn.), Audrey Cariveau (So., Kevil, Ky.), and Kora Norland (Sr., Fosston, Minn.) all earned NSIC All-Academic Team of Excellence. Layne Whaley (Jr., Ashland, Neb.), and Dana Melby (So., Clearbrook, Minn.) were named to the NSIC All-Academic Team.
In 2022, the Golden Eagles finished the season with a record of 5-23. Meseck led the Golden Eagles to an impressive season and finished with four more wins than in 2021. Mara Weisensel (Jr., New Ulm, Minn.) set the program record for most kills by a middle blocker with 20 kills on 47 total attacks against UMary. Four Minnesota Crookston volleyball players were also named to the NSIC All-Academic Team of Excellence. Bailey Schaefer (So., Brandon, Minn.), Mara Weisensel (Jr., New Ulm, Minn.), Madison Klimek (Sr., Oakdale, Minn.) and Layne Whaley (So., Ashland, Neb.) each earned the distinctive honor. Natalie Koke (R-Sr., Caledonia, Wis.) and Maria Jose Bustos Garcia (Sr., Cartagena, Columbia) earned honors on the All-Academic team.
In his first season as an assistant coach in 2021, UMN Crookston posted a 1-24 mark. The Golden Eagles were outstanding in the classroom, as they had Lauren Wallace, Bailey Mulcahy, Madison Klimek, and Natalie Koke all receive NSIC All-Academic laurels during the season. In addition, Wallace was named a 2021-22 NSIC Myles Brand All-Academic with Distinction recipient.
Meseck got his start in May of 2017 at Northern Cass High School as an assistant coach. In June of 2019, Meseck got his first college coaching opportunity at North Dakota State College of Science (NDSCS) in Wahpeton, N.D. Meseck had been with MSU Moorhead since February of 2020, where he played a key role in recruiting and was in charge of film software and film breakdown, as well as running the main social media accounts for the team's social media.
Since 2011, Meseck has been on the board and has been the head coach of Summit, one of the premier club volleyball programs in the state of North Dakota.
"I am eager to get into the gym at UMN Crookston! I am looking forward to building relationships, coaching, and encouraging our student athletes. I am excited to get to work in one of the most competitive volleyball conferences in Division II," said Meseck.
Meseck graduated from Minnesota State University Moorhead with a Bachelor of Science in exercise science with a minor in strength and conditioning. He also earned All-NSIC honors in track and field while he was a student-athlete for the Dragons. Meseck was the NSIC Men's Outdoor Individual Champion in men's triple jump in 2008.
