ABERDEEN, S.D. - The University of Minnesota Crookston soccer team held a clean sheet for nearly 84 minutes, but too late goals in the final six minutes sent Northern State University to a 2-0 win.
The Golden Eagles continued to play sound defensively, and limited the Wolves to six shots on goal and two late goals. Minnesota Crookston dropped to 0-5-3 (0-4-1 NSIC) with Friday's loss in Aberdeen, S.D. The Wolves improved to 4-1-2 (3-0-2 NSIC). Northern State was coming off a crucial tie against Minnesota State University, a top 10 side in NCAA Division II. The two squads had a 0-0 tie in 2025.
Minnesota Crookston started Payton King (So., GK, Fairfield, Calif.) in goal, her second start of the season. King had a clean sheet over 84 minutes but allowed two late goals. She had four saves. King has a 1.20 goals against average in 125 minutes played as a sophomore.
The Golden Eagles finished with four shots, none on frame. Andrea Cuenca Medina (Jr., MF, South St. Paul) paced Minnesota Crookston with two shots. Elise Lefers (Jr., MF/F, Brookings, S.D.), and Ell Furlong (Sr., MF, Liverpool, England) each added shots. Minnesota Crookston took two corner kicks.
Northern State had 16 shots at home, with six shots on goal. Jaylee Hofer paced the Wolves with two goals, and three shots on goal. Kendall Gack had four shots, with one on frame. Lauren Youngquist and Lauren Carpenter each had two shots.
In net, Audrey Burns, the reigning D2CIDA National Player of the Week, notched a clean sheet and no saves in Friday's win.
Hofer broke the scoreless tie on a penalty kick goal in the 84th minute. She broke through again just over two minutes later for her third goal of the season, sending the Wolves to a 2-0 win.
Minnesota Crookston remains on the road to face the University of Jamestown in Jamestown, N.D. Sunday, September 27.
