Roers Uses Gutsy Pitching Performance to Lift Golden Eagles to 4-3 Win Over Warriors

CROOKSTON, Minn. - Isaac Roers (R-Sr., RHP, Stacy, Minn.) was an ironman on the mound, throwing 135 pitches in 8.2 innings in a gutsy 4-3 win for the University of Minnesota Crookston baseball team over Winona State University Sunday, April 26. Fellow senior Connor Bushbaum (R-Sr., OF, Saginaw, Minn.) scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth, while another senior Joey Connelly (Sr., LHP, Eden Prairie, Minn.) earned the save.

The Golden Eagles improved to 25-19 (18-14 NSIC) with Sunday's win. Minnesota Crookston wins the series over the Warriors. Winona State fell to 22-22 (17-14 NSIC) with the loss. The Golden Eagles jumped the Warriors for fifth place in the standings, while Winona State is now sixth. Minnesota Crookston leads the series 4-2 in the last six games. 

Roers pitched one of his best outings of his career, as he tied Cody Pamperin's school-record for career appearances with Sunday's start. Roers tossed 8.2 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits. Roers struck out four, and walked one. Connelly pitched 0.1 innings, with no runs on no hits in his Senior Weekend save. 

Hunter Guenther took part in a classic NSIC pitcher's duel Sunday, throwing six innings and allowing one earned run on six hits. Guenther struck out seven, and walked two. Guenther also tossed over 100 pitches. Boyd Skelley allowed one run in 0.2 frames, on two hits. Carson Jones gave up an unearned run, but suffered the loss. Logan LaPlante pitched a scoreless 0.1 stanzas.

Minnesota Crookston notched nine hits. The Golden Eagles were lifted by Aaron Wensloff (Jr., IF, Roseau, Minn.), who went 2-of-5, with an RBI and two runs scored. Bushbaum went 2-of-4, with a run scored. Elias Leach (Fr., OF, Plymouth, Minn.) hit 1-of-2 with a run scored.

The Warriors had a total of six errors in the third game of the series.

Winona State took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a Payton Kohnle's solo shot.

Minnesota Crookston knotted the score 1-1 with Aaron Wensloff's eighth home run of the season. 

The Warriors took a 2-1 lead in the top of the second on a Connor Greuel fielder's choice. The Golden Eagles tried to make the play at the plate, but Connor Weed slid under the tag to give Winona State the advantage.

Minnesota Crookston evened the tally 2-2 in the bottom of the second when Miller reached on an error, bringing Leach in for a run. 

Winona State broke the tie 3-2 in the fourth on a Greuel single, plating Weed.

Minnesota Crookston knotted the game 3-3 in the seventh when Aaron Wensloff scored on a Cole Hebl (R-So., 1B, Hillsboro, N.D.) groundout.

The Golden Eagles took the 4-3 advantage in the eighth when Bushbaum scored as Kappes reached on an error.

Roers went back out for the ninth. He secured the first two outs, but Ben Hefel walked, and Ethan Patterson singled to give the Warriors two on with two outs. Connelly came on to get the final out. He retired Kohnle to obtain the 4-3 win.

The Golden Eagles enter an important stretch as they look to secure a NSIC Tournament spot for the fourth-straight year. They currently lead Wayne State College in eighth place by .62 percentage points. Minnesota Crookston trails Sioux Falls by just .38 percentage points in fourth place. Minnesota Crookston hosts Minot State University Tuesday, April 28 at 1:30 and 3:30 p.m. The Beavers are currently in ninth place in the conference standings, one spot out of the NSIC Tournament currently.
