BISMARCK, N.D. - The University of Minnesota Crookston baseball team suffered just their second sweep of the season, falling 5-3 and 13-6 to the University of Mary Wednesday, April 15 at Bismarck Municipal Ballpark in Bismarck, N.D.
The Golden Eagles dropped to 21-15 (14-10 NSIC) with Wednesday's losses. Minnesota Crookston has lost three-consecutive tilts. The Golden Eagles are in sixth place in the NSIC standings. UMary improved to 23-14 (16-8 NSIC) and they are in third place in the NSIC. The Golden Eagles are 5-3 in their last eight games against the Marauders. Minnesota Crookston is just .84 percentage points from UMary in third place, as the last 13 games in the NSIC slate will be crucial for the Golden Eagles.Â
Game One
UMary used the long ball and a dominant pitching outing from Ryan Chamberlain to pick up a 5-3 win over the Golden Eagles. Chamberlain tossed a complete game, going the full seven innings, and allowing three runs on six hits. He struck out eight, and walked two.
Kyle Odenbach (Sr., LHP, Thompson, N.D.) started and went three innings, allowing four earned runs on six hits. He struck out two, and walked one. Lake Hagen (Jr., RHP, Alexandria, Minn.) had his best relief outing of the season, throwing three scoreless innings on one hit, with a strikeout.
Jackson Fliflet (R-So., C, Wahpeton, N.D.) guided the Golden Eagles, hitting 2-of-3. Aaron Wensloff (Jr., IF, Roseau, Minn.) went 1-of-3, with three RBI and a run scored. Caden Kappes (Jr., 2B/SS, Wahpeton, N.D.) was 1-of-3, with a run scored, while Elias Leach (Fr., OF, Plymouth, Minn.) went 1-of-3, with a run scored.Â
The Marauders took the early 2-0 lead with a two-run blast from Isaac Pegors, driving in Kalem Haney.Â
UMary padded their lead to 5-0 in the third with a Bryce Leafgren three-run home run, scoring Pegors, and Haney.Â
Minnesota Crookston got two runs back in the top of the fourth with a two-run home run from Aaron Wensloff, scoring Leach to cut the deficit to 5-2.Â
The Golden Eagles cut the lead to 5-3 with an Aaron Wensloff sacrifice fly, plating Kappes. Fliflet was struck out with the bases loaded, preserving a 5-3 advantage for the Marauders.
UMary preserved the 5-3 advantage to win the first game Wednesday.
Game Two
The Marauders used lopsided innings in the third and sixth to take down Minnesota Crookston 13-6. The Golden Eagles had a total of seven errors in the second game to help lead to UMary's victory.
Nate Heymann (Jr., RHP, Waimea, Hawai'i) started and tossed 2.2 innings, allowing four runs on three hits. Braden Nelson (R-Fr., RHP, Minot, N.D.) fell to 1-1 with the loss, after allowing one run, the go-ahead run, on one hit. Ashton Detloff (Fr., LHP, Perham, Minn.) tossed 0.1 innings, giving up two unearned runs. Jaxson Bennett (R-Jr., RHP, Saginaw, Minn.) gave up three runs on three hits in 1.1 frames. Jake Jaroszewski (So., LHP, Fargo, N.D.) allowed two earned runs on three hits. Jaxon Hams (Fr., RHP, Thief River Falls, Minn.) tossed a scoreless inning, as did Derek Carpenter (R-Fr., RHP, Hatton, N.D.).Â
Michael Fagerland started and went four frames, allowing two earned runs on three hits. Jacob Burgess got the win in relief, tossing a scoreless fifth on one hit.
Hebl lifted the Golden Eagle offense going 2-of-4 with two RBI, and a run scored. Leach went 1-of-5 with two RBI and one run scored. Tori Uhlich (Jr., OF, Wahpeton, N.D.) went 1-of-4, with one run scored.Â
Minnesota Crookston leapt out to an early 2-0 lead with Leach's sixth home of the season, driving in Uhlich.
The Golden Eagles added two runs in the top of the third when Cole Hebl (R-So., 1B, Hillsboro, N.D.) hit a double, driving in Aaron Wensloff, and Americo Sculati (R-Sr., OF, Golden Valley, Minn.) to make it 4-0.
The Marauders answered with four runs in the bottom of the third. A Haney single drove in Luke Rhee to cut it to 4-1. Marcus Butts delivered a single, to plate Hudsen Sheldon to trim the lead to 4-2. UMary knotted the game 4-4 on a Leafgren base-knock, scoring Pegors and Butts.Â
UMary took a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the fourth when Sheldon doubled, scoring Cru Walker.Â
The Marauders pushed their lead to 6-4 in the fifth when Leafgren crossed the plate on a wild pitch. UMary extended their advantage to 7-4 when Hank Griffin scored on a Rhee sacrifice fly.
Dylan Alexander (R-Fr., C, Glenwood, Minn.) knocked out his first home run of his career, to bring the Golden Eagles within 7-5 in the top of the sixth. It also marked Alexander's first career collegiate hit.
The Marauders countered with six runs in the bottom of the sixth. A Butts single, drove in Sheldon to widen the gap to 8-5. Pegors added a two-run home run to the fray, scoring Butts to push the lead to 10-5. Leafgren came in on a throwing error to make it 11-5. Griffin scored on a Rhee groundout to push the lead to 12-5. Kieran Gaffney completed the inning as he crossed on a wild pitch to push the advantage to 13-5.
Minnesota Crookston got a run back in the eighth on a Kappes single to knock in Hebl, but it would not be enough to overcome the deficit as they fell 13-6.Â
The Golden Eagles remain on the road to face Minnesota State University, who is No. 25 in the Coaches' Poll. They face the Mavericks Saturday, April 18 at 1:30 and 3:30 p.m., and Sunday, April 19 at 12 p.m.
