Golden Eagles Sweep Season Series with 86-78 Win over Jamestown

JAMESTOWN, N.D. - The University of Minnesota Crookston women's basketball team used a balanced effort, with five scoring in double figures, to defeat the University of Jamestown 86-78 at Harold Newman Arena in Jamestown, N.D. 

Minnesota Crookston improved to 7-17 (6-12 NSIC) with Saturday's road victory. The Golden Eagles sweep Jamestown, and improve to 6-0 all-time against the Jimmies. Jamestown dropped to 6-16 (4-14 NSIC) with the loss. The Golden Eagles are in sixth in the NSIC North. They are just one win behind MSU Moorhead and Minot State in a tie for fourth in the division. They are currently tied for 12th with Augustana in the overall standings. 

The Golden Eagles had five score in double digits. Riley Jenkins (R-Jr., G/F, Galesburg, Ill.) guided Minnesota Crookston going 6-of-10 from the field, and 2-of-5 from beyond the arc. Jenkins notched 18 points Saturday, and averaged 18.0 points for the weekend. Rayna Klejeski (Jr., F, Barnum, Minn.) added 17 points, four rebounds, and five assists. Klejeski has been a consistent force this season for the Golden Eagles. She has six-straight double-digit scoring games. Klejeski averaged 19.0 points, and 8.5 rebounds this weekend. 

Anna Westby (Fr., F, Eveleth, Minn.) tallied 16 points, five boards, and two blocked shots. Hope Dudycha (R-Jr., G, Austin, Minn.) came off the bench for 10 points on 2-of-4 from the field. 

Emma Miller (Sr., G, Albertville, Minn.) finished with 15 points, six rebounds, and six assists. Miller was 5-of-15 from the field. Miller is making her final charge for Brooke Olson of Minnesota Duluth's all-time NSIC scoring record. Miller needs 13 points to move past the mark. She currently has 1,603 conference points. 

The Golden Eagles shot 28-of-59 for 47.5 percent from the field. They went 9-of-27 for 33.3 percent from distance, and 21-of-26 for 80.8 percent from the stripe. Minnesota Crookston had 16 assists to just eight turnovers. They were outrebounded 47-28.

Jamestown was lifted by 34 points and 10 rebounds from Allie Berns on 15-of-22 from the field. Haidyn Crockett chipped in 15 points. Jessika Lofstrom notched 10 points and nine boards. Hali Savela finished with five points and nine rebounds. The Jimmies were 31-of-72 for 43.1 percent from the field. They shot 3-of-26 for 11.5 percent from distance, and 13-of-13 from the line. They scored 50 points in the paint.

The Golden Eagles raced out to an 8-2 advantage with a fastbreak bucket for Jenkins. A Haidyn Crockett trey brought Jamestown within 8-7 with 6:16 left in the first quarter. Minnesota Crookston pushed out to a 17-10 lead on a jumper from Miller. A pair of Halle Crockett free throws cut the deficit to 20-16 with 1:51 left in the frame. An old-fashioned three-point play from Klejeski gave Minnesota Crookston a 28-16 lead. Jamestown closed the quarter with a Lofstrom bucket to pull within 28-18.

Minnesota Crookston opened the second stanza with an 8-2 rally, using a Klejeski bucket to go ahead 36-20. Lofstrom trimmed the deficit to 36-24 with 6:10 left in the frame. The Golden Eagles widened the gap to 19 points on a Jenkins free throw with 3:03 remaining in the second stanza. The Jimmies cut the lead to 47-34 with a Haidyn Crockett basket. Minnesota Crookston closed the half with a Klejeski basket to go into the locker room with a 49-34 advantage. 

A Berns basket cut Jamestown's deficit to 53-40 with 6:20 remaining in the third. Minnesota Crookston countered with a 9-0 rally as a Jenkins free throw pushed the lead to 62-40. Jamestown closed the frame on a 9-1 and a Haidyn Crockett old-fashioned three-point play to cut the Golden Eagle lead to 63-49.

A Savela trey brought the Jimmies within 63-52 early in the fourth frame. The Golden Eagles used a 5-0 run, guided by an old-fashioned three-point play from Westby to take a 68-52 lead. Jamestown was able to trim the deficit to 73-62 with a Berns three-point play. They were able to cut further into the lead, 81-73, on a Jordan Munson basket. The Golden Eagles were able to hold off the Jimmies for an 86-78 win.

Minnesota Crookston hosts Minot State University Thursday, February 12 at 5:30 p.m., at Gary Senske Court at Lysaker Gymnasium in Crookston, Minn.
