Topeka, Kan. -- Minnesota Crookston softball scored at least one run in the second through seventh innings, defeating Fort Hays State on Friday morning, 9-5. In game two, the Golden Eagles scored three first inning runs and never looked back, defeating Newman 9-2 for their first day sweep of the season.
Â
Minnesota Crookston moves to 2-9.
Game One
Megan Surgenor (Fr., P/OF, Andover, Minn.) went the distance and picked up her first win of her young career.
Â
Neither team would score in the first inning, but the Golden Eagles would strike for a run in the top of the second as they would pull off a double steal, scoring Chayse Doering (So., OF, Shakopee, Minn.).
Â
In the top of the second, Emily Kalina (Fr., CF/P, Rice Lake, Wis.) would drive in Jocelyn Hernandez (So., OF, Tracy, Calif.) for a 2-0 advantage.
Â
After Minnesota Crookston would get another run in the top of the third on an RBI groundout by Valerie VanZant (Fr., MIF, Salina, Kan.), the Tigers of Fort Hays State would strike for three in the bottom of the fourth for a 4-3 lead.
Â
The Tigers lead wouldn't last long, as Surgenor would help herself out and go long to tie the things up at four. The Golden Eagles would get a two out rally started and take the lead for good on a Madeline Murray (So., C/3B, Abilene, Kan.) RBI double.
Â
The Golden Eagles would score another run in the top of the sixth, as Surgenor would score on a FHSU error.
Â
In the bottom of the sixth, the Surgenor would see the Tigers score one run with the bases loaded, but would get out of a bases loaded jam to keep a one run lead intact.
Â
The Golden Eagles would strike for three runs in the top of the seventh, using another big hit from Kalina to help the Golden Eagles take a 9-5 lead into the bottom of the seventh, which would be more than enough for Surgenor to slam the door shut.
Â
The Golden Eagles collected a season high 12 hits, led by Kalina, who finished with three. Surgenor and Irelyn Spencer (R-Jr., IF, Rapid, City, S.D.) each added two hits apiece. Surgenor and Doering scored five of the nine runs on the morning.
Â
Surgenor went the distance, earning her first career win, giving up just one earned run and striking out a career best seven.
Â
Game TwoÂ
Hannah Trzinski (So., P/1B, Stevens Point, Wis.) picked up her first win of the season as the Golden Eagles got to 2-9 to start the year with a 9-2 win over Newman University.
Â
The first inning was the perfect start for the Golden Eagles, getting their first three runs of the game as Jocelyn Hernandez (So., OF, Tracy, Calif.) scored thanks to a throwing error. Then, Rayna French (Jr., C, La Salle, Manitoba) hit a double, bringing Emily Kalina (Fr., CF/LHP, Rice Lake, Wis.) home for the 2-0 lead. Rayna French was brought home on a throw, and the Golden Eagles closed out the first inning with a 3-1 lead. Hannah Nordby scored on a throw for the Jets.
Â
Trzinski scored to make it a 4-1 game thanks to a single to the right side from Emily Kalina. Right after that score, Kalina stole second base, giving Valerie VanZant (Fr., MIF, Salina, Kan.) the opportunity to score on the throw. Trzinski also struck out her second batter of the game.
Â
Madeline Murray (So., C/3B, Abilene, Kan.) homered to left center, giving the Golden Eagles the 6-1 advantage. Trzinski had another great inning, striking out one batter and only allowing one hit through the first three innings.Â
Â
Irelyn Spencer (R-Jr., IF, Rapid City, S.D.) scored in the fourth inning on a Hannah Trzinski walk. Chayse Doering (So., OF, Shakopee, Minn.) also scored in the fourth inning thanks to an RBI from VanZant. The Golden Eagles took their 8-1 lead into the fifth inning.Â
Â
The Golden Eagles scored their final run in the fifth inning, with Irelyn Spencer singling up the middle to bring home Emily Kalina. The Jets would also score in this inning, with Nordby getting her second run.Â
Â
Both teams had just one hit in the 6th inning. Madisen Yandle (So., SS, Lakeville, Minn.) hit a double to left center. Trzinski struck out her fourth batter of the game, continuing her excellent game at pitcher.Â
Â
The seventh inning was uneventful, with the first three Golden Eagles batters going out. The Jets left two on base as they were unable to score, and would lose the game 9-2.Â
Â
Trzinski was excellent in her first win, striking out four batters and only allowing four hits.
Â
The Golden Eagles are back in action tomorrow at 10 a.m. against Emporia State University and at 4 p.m. to take on University of Central Missouri.
