Minnesota Crookston Draws Winona State 1-1 Led by Holthaus Goal

CROOKSTON, Minn. - The University of Minnesota Crookston soccer team earned a 1-1 draw against Winona State University Sunday, October 4 at the Minnesota Crookston Soccer Field. The Golden Eagles were led by a goal from Callie Holthaus (Jr., F, Richmond, Minn.).

Minnesota Crookston moved to 0-7-4 (0-6-2 NSIC) with the tie. They earned their second draw in conference play. The four ties in a season ties the second-most draws in a season with 2013 as the Golden Eagles went 3-11-4. The most ties ever came in 2014 when the U of M Crookston posted a 6-6-6 mark. Winona State moved to 1-8-1 (1-6-1 NSIC) with the tie.

Holthaus notched her first-ever goal with the target. Marasia Warren (Fr., F, Vermillion, S.D.) earned her first-ever point with an assist, while Marsia Green (Sr., F, Waconia, Minn.) notched the fourth point of her career and second-ever assist.

The Golden Eagles had four shots, with four on frame. Holthaus, Jillian Muehlberger (Jr., F, Shawnee, Kan.), Lilly Oelrich (Fr., D, Savage, Minn.), and Aleisha Cortez (So., F, South St. Paul, Minn.) notched the chances. The Warriors notched 12 shots, with seven on target. Madison Barnick scored the penalty-kick goal and had three shots overall. Kyleigh Jannisch notched four shots, with two on frame.

In goal, Phoenix DeBrusk (So., GK, Thunder Bay, Ontario) allowed one goal, with six saves. Abigail Rounds allowed one goal, with three saves in the draw.

Winona State controlled the offensive chances early on in the game, as they continued to get the ball into the corners of the pitch, but were unable to successfully connect on crosses or passes. Barnick had the first shot on goal, saved by DeBrusk in the sixth minute. Jannisch's chance in the 23rd minute was stymied by DeBrusk. The Warriors had a shot on goal from Addison Thomas in the 32nd minute, put away by DeBrusk.

The Golden Eagles were able to find opportunities later in the second half and capitalized in the 37th minute. The Winona State defender fell, with Green grabbing possession of the ball and putting it near the box. Warren corralled it and had the ball deflected, where Holthaus got behind the keeper and found the back of the net to put Minnesota Crookston ahead 1-0.

Minnesota Crookston rode the positive momentum into the early part of the second half and controlled the pace in the first 15 minutes. Cortez and Oelrich both found chances in the first 15 minutes, but Rounds stopped them.

In the 63rd minute, Winona State was awarded a penalty kick on a foul in the box. Barnick connected on the penalty kick, for her second goal of the season as she knotted the game 1-1.

The Warriors put four attackers forward late in the game, and tried to wear down the defense of Minnesota Crookston, but the Golden Eagles stayed strong as they have throughout the year. Muehlberger had a shot on goal late in the 89th minute, saved by Rounds, but the score stayed 1-1 as the final horn sounded.

Minnesota Crookston remains in Crookston to host Bemidji State University Friday, October 9 to open Homecoming weekend at 3 p.m.
