Minnesota Crookston Women's Basketball Falls in Last-Second Heartbreaker to South Dakota Mines

CROOKSTON, Minn. - Savea Mansfield hit a jumper with two seconds remaining to send South Dakota Mines to an 80-79 win over the University of Minnesota Crookston women's basketball team Sunday, January 4 at Gary Senske Court at Lysaker Gymnasium. The Hardrockers overcame a six-point deficit with 2:49 remaining to pick up the heartbreaker Sunday in Crookston. The Golden Eagles had taken a 79-78 lead with 15 seconds remaining on an Anna Westby (Fr., F, Eveleth, Minn.) basket, but a late turnover led to the game-winning shot for Mansfield.

The Golden Eagles dropped to 3-11 (2-6 NSIC) with Sunday's non-conference loss. Minnesota Crookston finishes their non-conference slate with a 1-5. The Golden Eagles are 1-1 all-time against South Dakota Mines. The Hardrockers improved to 5-7 with the victory.

The Golden Eagles were guided by a double-double from Riley Jenkins (R-Jr., G/F, Galesburg, Ill.) with 19 points, 11 boards, and six assists. She notched her sixth career double-double, but first of the season. Emma Miller (Sr., G, Albertville, Minn.) came close to a double-double with 24 points and nine boards. Rayna Klejeski (Jr., F, Barnum, Minn.) was also one rebound shy of a double-double with 12 points and nine boards. Westby finished with 12 points and six rebounds, while Halle Winjum (So., G, Crookston, Minn.) notched four points and seven boards. Hope Dudycha (R-Jr., G, Austin, Minn.) came off the bench for six.

Minnesota Crookston shot 28-of-66 for 42.4 percent. They went 8-of-26 for 30.8 percent from distance, and 15-of-16 for 93.8 percent from the stripe. The Golden Eagles had 14 assists to 16 turnovers. They outrebounded the Hardrockers 46-34, including 15 offensive boards. 

South Dakota Mines was paced by Morning Grace Spotted Bear with 27 points and nine rebounds on 12-of-23 from the field. Mansfield added 26 points and eight boards. Abigail Dille came off the bench for 13 points. The three players accounted for 66 of 80 points Sunday.

The Hardrockers went 33-of-72 for 45.8 percent from the field, and 6-of-24 for 25.0 percent from three-point range. They finished 8-of-12 for 66.7 percent from the line. South Dakota Mines had 22 assists, and just eight turnovers.

South Dakota Mines jumped out to a 7-3 lead on an Addison Miranda trey, as they set the tone early. They held a 12-7 advantage following a Mansfield jumper. South Dakota Mines continued to hold stride with a 16-11 advantage after a Mansfield bucket with 2:01 left in the quarter. The Golden Eagles closed the stanza on a 5-1 run to pull within 17-16 after a pair of Jenkins free throws.

Minnesota Crookston set the tone in the second quarter with a 10-0 run propelled by eight points from Miller. The Golden Eagles held a 26-17 advantage with 6:58 remaining in the quarter. The U of M Crookston led 32-23 after a pair of Westby free throws with 3:38 left in the frame. South Dakota Mines hit back-to-back buckets to pull within 32-27. The Golden Eagles would be able to hold the lead, having a 40-34 edge after a Jenkins free throw.

The Golden Eagles extended their lead to nine on a Westby trey out of the locker room. South Dakota Mines countered with a 7-0 rally, as a Mansfield basket cut the deficit to 43-41 with 7:32 left in the section. The Golden Eagles used a 4-0 run to go ahead 47-41 with a Winjum jumper. Minnesota Crookston pushed their lead to nine on Klejeski free throws with 5:18 left in the quarter. The Hardrockers came back with an 8-0 run, using a Spotted Bear basket to pull within 55-53. The Golden Eagles were able to lead by three after Jenkins put-back her own missed trey to make it 59-56 heading into the quarter sojourn.

Mansfield opened the stanza with a trey to knot the game 59-59. The Hardrockers took a 64-63 edge on an old-fashioned three-point play from Spotted Bear with 7:55 left in the tilt. Minnesota Crookston fired back with an 8-0 run, as a Dudycha old-fashioned three-point play put the Golden Eagles ahead 71-64. Minnesota Crookston held a 75-68 advantage after a Klejeski bucket with 4:41 remaining in the game. A Mansfield triple brought the Hardrockers within three, but Miller came back with a bucket to give the Golden Eagles a 77-71 edge with 2:49 remaining in the contest. South Dakota Mines responded with a 7-0 rally as an Emma Martin bucket gave them a 78-77 lead with 45 seconds left. Minnesota Crookston was able to give themselves chances off offensive rebounds, resulting in a Westby bucket on a great out-of-bounds play with 15 seconds remaining to give the Golden Eagles a 79-78 advantage. On the opposite end, Spotted Bear was fouled but missed both shots resulting in a Winjum rebound. On the out-of-bounds, Jenkins' pass was deflected by the defender and off her, giving the ball back to South Dakota Mines. On the out-of-bounds play, the Hardrockers found Mansfield for the jumper to make it 80-79 with two seconds remaining. The Golden Eagles attempted to throw the long pass, but it was intercepted as South Dakota Mines held on for the win.

The Golden Eagles get back to NSIC play with a meeting at Winona State University Friday, January 9.
