TAMPA, Fla. - The University of Minnesota Crookston baseball team fell 15-5 to No. 24 Davenport University Friday, February 28 at the University of Tampa Baseball Field in Tampa, Fla.
The Golden Eagles dropped to 4-4 (3-1 NSIC) with Friday's loss. Davenport improved to 7-1 with the victory.
Minnesota Crookston scored five runs, on seven hits. They were guided by Kobe Senn (R-Jr., IF, Fargo, N.D.), who went 2-of-4, with one RBI, and two runs scored. Dylan Debilzen (Fr., OF, Parkers Prairie, Minn.) went 1-of-4, with a run scored. Sawyer Satrom (Sr., IF, Portland, N.D.) finished 1-of-4, with an RBI.
The loss for the Golden Eagles went to Nate Benning (So., LHP, Browerville, Minn.), who fell to 0-2 after allowing five earned runs, on six hits in 4.1 innings. Benning struck out four, and walked one. Jaxson Bennett (R-So., RHP, Saginaw, Minn.) tossed 1.1 innings, allowing one run, on three hits. Eli Denisen (R-So., LHP, Winona, Minn.) allowed no earned runs, on two hits in one inning of work. Kaylor Chamberlain (Fr., RHP, Mankato, Minn.) made his debut, pitching a scoreless inning.
The win for Davenport went to Austin VanderMarkt, who tossed five innings. He allowed no earned runs, on four hits. VanderMarket struck out four, and walked two. At the plate, the Panthers notched 17 hits, two of which were home runs. Cody Hultink lifted Davenport, going 3-of-6, with three RBIs, and four runs scored. Michael Tchavdarov was 2-of-4, with four RBIs, and two runs scored.
Minnesota Crookston took a 1-0 lead when Kyler Miller (Fr., IF, Grand Rapids, Minn.) reached on an error, bringing in Senn.
In the top of the third, Hultink singled up the middle to score Chase Kemp. The Panthers took a 3-1 lead when Tchavdarov doubled in Hultink, and Zach Hopman.
In the top of the fifth, Dylan Pawenski singled through the left side to plate Hultink and push the lead to 4-1. With the bases loaded, Justin Johnson was hit by a pitch to bring home Tchavdarov. Later in the top of the fifth, Sam Clay singled up the middle to score Pawenski, and Wyatt Epple. The Panthers pushed their advantage to 8-1 with a Kemp single, scoring Johnson. The scoring in the fifth continued as Hultink singled in Kemp to make it 9-1. The final run in the fifth scored on a single from Hopman, bringing in Logan Todd.
Davenport moved the lead to 11-1 in the top of the sixth when Coltrane Rubner scored on a passed ball.
The Panthers extended their lead to 13-1 with a two-run shot from Tchavdarov, scoring himself, and Hultink.
The Golden Eagles made a dent into the score in the bottom of the eighth. Senn hit a single through the left side, scoring Debilzen to cut it to 13-2. With the bases loaded, Larsen walked to bring in Americo Sculati (R-Jr., OF, Golden Valley, Minn.). Caden Kappes (So., IF, Wahpeton, N.D.) came on for a pinch-hit infield single, plating Senn to cut it to 13-4. The U of M Crookston trimmed the deficit to 13-5 when Satrom hit an infield single to score Jonah Norman (R-So., C, Winnipeg, Manitoba).
Davenport extended their lead to 14-5 with a solo home run from Hultink in the top of the ninth. The Panthers pushed the advantage to 15-5 with a Garrett Swan single, scoring Hopman.
The Golden Eagles continue their Florida trip, facing No. 15 Ashland University Saturday, March 1 at 10 a.m. C.T.
