BISMARCK, N.D. - The University of Mary used a 36-16 run in the third quarter to upend the University of MInnesota Crookston 84-68 Thursday, December 11 at McDowell Activity Center in Bismarck, N.D. The Golden Eagles outscored the Marauders 52-48 in the other three quarters, but the third quarter would be enough for UMary's triumph at home.
Minnesota Crookston dropped to 1-8 (0-4 NSIC) with Thursday's loss. UMary improved to 9-3 (3-1 NSIC) with the victory. The Marauders have the last five wins in the series.
Emma Miller (Sr., G, Albertville, Minn.) paced the Golden Eagles with 21 points on 9-of-19 from the field. Miller had her first 20-point outing since November 19. She added five rebounds, and two assists. Anna Westby (Fr., F, Eveleth, Minn.) added 12 points and four boards. Rayna Klejeski (Jr., F, Barnum, Minn.) finished with eight points, and six boards. Halle Winjum (So., G, Crookston, Minn.) came off the bench for nine points and three assists.Â
The Golden Eagles went 23-of-54 for 42.6 percent from the field. Minnesota Crookston was 4-of-9 for 44.4 percent from three-point range, and 18-of-22 for 81.8 percent from the stripe. UMary outrebounded the Golden Eagles 33-31. Minnesota Crookston finished with 16 turnovers.
The Marauders were guided by 22 points from Emily Jaenke on 8-of-14 from the field, and 6-of-10 from deep. Allison Undlin chipped in 20 points and six boards. Chloe Pfau had 15 points. UMary shot 31-of-62 for 50.0 percent from the field. They went 10-of-25 for 40.0 percent from distance, and 12-of-17 for 70.6 percent from the stripe.Â
Minnesota Crookston took a 6-4 lead on a Klejeski basket. UMary countered with a 7-0 run, as a Jaenke triple gave them an 11-6 advantage with 3:44 remaining in the first quarter. A Miller basket cut the Golden Eagle deficit to 11-8. The Marauders responded with a 7-0 run to push to an 18-8 lead after a Eden Fridley basket. UMary went into the quarter break with a 20-10 advantage following a Jaenke bucket.
A Jaenke trey widened the Marauder advantage to 23-10 early in the second quarter. Minnesota Crookston countered with an 8-0 run, using a WInjum hoop to pull within 23-18. UMary didn't hit a field goal for over five minutes. Chloe Nuss extended the lead to 25-18 on a basket. Jaenke was able to lengthen the lead to 30-18 with a triple. Minnesota Crookston came back with a 5-0 run lifted by Miller to pull within 30-23. The Golden Eagles closed the quarter with a Winjum free throw to cut the deficit to 32-26.Â
Minnesota Crookston cut the deficit to 32-28 with a Jenkins basket to open the third quarter. UMary rallied with a 9-0 run, as a Pfau triple gave the Marauders a 41-28 lead. Miller responded with a jumper to cut the deficit to 41-30. The Marauders came back with another 10-0 run to extend the lead to 51-30. The Golden Eagles made only two field goals in the first five minutes of the stanza. They pulled within 51-34 on a Miller bucket. UMary went into the quarter intermission with a 68-42 lead.
The Golden Eagles had an improved fourth quarter, outsourcing the Marauders 26-16, however the third quarter damage wouldn't be surmountable, as they fell 84-68.Â
Minnesota Crookston remains on the road to face Minot State University Saturday, December 13 at 5:30 p.m.
