Crookston, Minn. – Every set on Homecoming Saturday was tight between the University of Jamestown and Minnesota Crookston and every set was won by the Jimmies, who would sweep Minnesota Crookston (23-25, 23-25, 19-25).
It's the first NSIC win for the Jimmies in program history and Minnesota Crookston falls to 6-9 (0-7 NSIC).
Set One
The Jimmies would score the first two points of the opening set, but
Abigail Ernster (Fr., OH, La Crescent, Minn.) and
Madison Carsten (Jr., OH, Wadena, Minn.) would finish off a pair of kills and
Emma Malek (Jr., MH, Plainfield, Ill.) would collect a service ace for a 3-2 lead.
Another Golden Eagle service ace would give the Golden Eagles a 7-4 lead, but six straight by the Jimmies would give them a 10-7 lead.
Later in the set, the Jimmies would take a 23-18 lead, forcing a
Nick Meseck timeout.
The timeout would be a good one for the Golden Eagles, who would score four straight with kills by
Carizma Muth (R-So., OH, Randolph, Wis.,),
Ellery Ehresmann (Fr., S, Albany, Minn.) and Malek.
The Golden Eagles would fend off one set point, but couldn't set off another, as the Jimmies would win by a pair.
Set Two
The second set would kind of be like that movie that started good, but mostly everybody disliked the ending.
The Golden Eagles would trail early on, but then would go on their largest run of the match, a 7-0 run, capped off by a
Megan Schoenfelder (Jr., MH, Zumbrota, Minn.) kill.
Throughout the set, the Golden Eagles would do an outstanding job of siding out one, but that would change late in the set.
Schoenfelder and Ernster would team up for a massive duo block and give the Golden Eagles a 21-17 lead.
The Jimmies would go on a 5-0 run, with three of those points being free balls that would land on the Golden Eagles side.
Trailing 22-21, Minnesota Crookston would score the next two with kills from Muth and Carsten, but the Golden Eagles would see UJ score the next three points to steal the set and take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Set Three
It would be a fast start for the Jimmies in the third set, as they would race to a 6-1 lead, but the Golden Eagles would turn to Carsten to help the Golden Eagles get back in the set to trail by just one at 6-5.
From that point on, the Jimmies would take control of the set and win the set by six and the match in three.
Individual Stats
Carsten and Muth finished with 13 and 12 kills, respectively. As a team, the Golden Eagles hit .132 as a team.
Kailee Waasdorp (Jr., DS, West Fargo, N.D.) was outstanding for the second straight night in the back, finishing with 23 digs.
The big number was at the service line. Minnesota Crookston finished with five service errors in the match, but four in that all-important first set.
What's Next
The Golden Eagles will look to get in the win column next weekend, as they head to North Dakota, starting with a Friday match at UMary.
