Syrup Leads Minnesota Crookston Past Dragons in Season Opener 4-1

CROOKSTON, Minn. - The University of Minnesota Crookston hockey team was propelled by newly-selected captain Logan Syrup (5th, F, Park River, N.D.) with two goals as they opened the season with a 4-1 win over Minnesota State University Moorhead. The Golden Eagles open their season for the second-consecutive season. The Golden Eagles improved to 1-0 with the victory. 

Syrup had two goals, and is at 82 goals, and 183 points in his five-year career. Mason Romfo (So., F, Langdon, N.D.) followed up his historic 70-point freshman season with a goal, and an assist. Jackson Dodds (5th, F, Watford City, N.D.) tallied a goal, while Alexander Bailey (5th, D, Crosby, N.D.), and Anthony Foster (Jr., F, Warroad, Minn.) added assists. Minnesota Crookston tallied 67 shots, with 40 on frame. Tyler Lorenz (So., D, Shakopee, Minn.) notched seven shots on goal. Romfo had five, and Syrup four. 

The Dragons were led by a goal from Justin Stalboerger, with an assist from Blake Alonzo. Jace Blythe guided MSU Moorhead with four shots, while Alonzo, Lane Cirks, and Stalboerger each had three. MSU Moorhead finished with 25 shots, with 15 on goal. 

Minnesota Crookston got on the scoreboard first in the ninth minute as Romfo took the puck off a defender's stick and slid it past Connor Hedblum for the goal. In the 11th minute, Syrup tallied an unassisted goal as he got the puck off a deflection and scored. 

The Golden Eagles pushed their advantage to 3-0 in the second period with a third minute goal from Syrup as he gathered the puck off a pass off the boards from Bailey and found the back of the net for Minnesota Crookston. In the 16th minute, the Dragons cut the deficit to 3-1 when Stalboerger scored off a helper from Alonzo.

Minnesota Crookston put the game away with a goal in the first minute of the third period when Jackson Dodds scored off assists from Foster, and Romfo. 

Tyler Swanson (So., G, Moorhead, Minn.) got the win in goal, after allowing just one goal and making 14 saves. 

The Golden Eagles remain at home to host the Dragons at 1 p.m., at the Crookston Sports Center Saturday, October 11.
