Minot State Sweeps Minnesota Crookston in NSIC Action on Saturday

Minot, N.D. – University of Minnesota Crookston softball traveled west to take on Minot State in a Saturday doubleheader.

Minot State won the first game, 8-1, after a late scoring barrage propelled the Beavers to the game one win.

The Beavers would use another big inning in game two, scoring three runs in the third, which is all they would need for the game two win by three runs and earning the sweep over the Golden Eagles.

Minnesota Crookston falls to 12-34 (5-17 NSIC).

Game One
The Beavers struck first on a pair of runs off of Sydney Eggers (Fr., P, Sylvania, Ohio), who earned a start for the second straight game.

Trailing 2-0, Minnesota Crookston would look to one of their best hitters to get them on the board. Whitnee Curry (Jr., MIF/OF, Lincoln, Neb.) would drive in Paige Shwaluk (Sr., MIF, Portage la Prairie, Manitoba), making it a 2-1 game.

Following the third inning, the Beavers would score two runs in both the fifth and sixth innings, allowing the Beavers to control the opening game of the doubleheader.

Paige Shwaluk had another multi-hit game, her 12th of the season, going 2-4, leading the six-hit attack by the Golden Eagles. Curry, Emerson Thompson (R-So., C, Lincoln, Neb.), Shaelyn Grant (Sr., C/OF, Grand Junction, Colo.) and Brittney Mengel (Jr., OF, Sullivan, Wis.) also collected a hit in the game. The Golden Eagles left five runners on base.

Eggers fell to 0-2 in the circle, giving up two runs on four hits. Evie Stuck (Jr., P, Papillion, Neb.) and Kailee Pollard (Jr., P, Marshalltown, Iowa) each pitched in relief.

Game Two
Both teams would go scoreless in the first inning, but Minot State would pounce on the Golden Eagles early once again, scoring two in the bottom of the second.

MSU would eventually take a 6-0 lead, but the Golden Eagles would try and mount a comeback. Charlotte Dombrowski (So., P/OF, Valparaiso, Ind.) would reach on a fielding error, allowing both Mengel and Ruth Frieberg (So., OF, Hopkins, Minn.) to score. Dombrowski would come across to score on another Beaver error, cutting the lead in half to 6-3.

That 6-3 score would be the final tally, as the Beavers would shut down the Golden Eagles in the sixth and seventh innings.

The Golden Eagles finished with four hits in the game. Rayna French (Fr., C, La Salle, Manitoba), Haley Koch (Jr., C, Mondamin, Iowa), Thompson and Mengel each collected a hit in the game.

Thayda Houser (Sr., P, Seymour, Iowa) falls to 5-12 on the season, after giving up six runs on nine hits, while striking out three in four innings. Alexa Guilford (So., P, Crystal City, Manitoba) came in for relief of Houser and was outstanding, giving up just one hit in two innings of work.

What's Next
The Golden Eagles will make the trip south tomorrow and head to Bismarck for a doubleheader with UMary. First pitch is scheduled for 12 P.M., from Bismarck.
