Minnesota Crookston Swept by St. Cloud State in Home Opener on Tuesday

Crookston, Minn. – Minnesota Crookston softball opened up the home portion of their schedule on a windy and cold Tuesday against St. Cloud State. The Huskies allowed just three runs across 14 innings to sweep the Golden Eagles, 7-1 and 3-2.

Minnesota Crookston falls to 8-24 (1-7 NSIC).

Game One
The Huskies would strike first in the top half of the first inning with a two out rally, as Brooke Holmes would single in a pair of runs for a 2-0 lead.

Bethany Weiss would add on to the Huskies lead with a home run to center in the top of the third.

The Golden Eagles would get a run right back as Whitnee Curry (Jr., MIF/OF, Lincoln, Neb.) would single in Sophie Juntunen (So., 1B, St. Michael, Minn.).

The Huskies would get out of that inning with just the one run scored by the Golden Eagles and they would add on to the lead in the top of the fifth, with the big swing a three-run home run by Maggie Fitzgerald, helping SCSU to a 7-1 lead, which would be the final tally.

Minnesota Crookston finished the game with four hits. Curry, Juntunen, Shaelyn Grant (Sr., C/OF, Grand Junction, Colo.) and Rayna French (Fr., C, La Salle, Manitoba) each collected a hit.

Evie Stuck (Jr., P/OF, Papillion, Neb.) went six innings of work, while giving up seven earned runs on 10 hits, but struck out a season-high nine hitters.

Game Two
Much like in game one, the Huskies would strike for two straight runs, one in the first inning and one in the second on a solo home run.

The Golden Eagles would have traffic in seemingly every inning and they were able to break through in the bottom of the third. Grant would hit a line drive down the right field line, which would score Paige Shwaluk (Sr., MIF, Portage la Prairie, Manitoba). Grant and Curry would be stranded on the base paths.

The fourth and fifth innings would see no scoring by either team, but the Huskies would strike for one in the top of the sixth on a sacrifice fly.

The Golden Eagles would load the bases in the bottom of the sixth and would score a run on a Maddie Shwaluk (Sr., OF, Portage la Prairie, Manitoba) RBI groundout. The one run would be all the Golden Eagles would get and would trail heading into the final stanza.

The Golden Eagles would pitch a scoreless top of the seventh and would get Curry on to lead off the inning, but the junior shortstop would get as far as second, as the Huskies would hold on to the one run win.

Minnesota Crookston outhit the Huskies 10-3 in game two. Juntunen led the way going a career-high 3-3 on the day. Reagan Emerick (R-Jr., MIF, Macomb, Ill.) and Curry each finished with two hits on the day. Curry is now 9-13 in her last four games.

Thayda Houser (Sr., P, Seymour, Iowa) struck out four Huskies in five innings of work, while giving up just two earned runs and three hits. Alexa Guilford (So., P, Crystal City, Manitoba) gave up an earned run in two innings of work.
