Duluth, Minn. – Minnesota Crookston softball played their first Wednesday conference doubleheader of the season earlier this afternoon in Duluth, taking on the Bulldogs of Minnesota Duluth.
The Golden Eagles would fall in game one, 8-0, in five innings.
The Bulldogs would score the final eight runs of game two to sweep the Golden Eagles with a 9-2 win.
Minnesota Crookston falls to 9-29 (2-12 NSIC).
Game One
The Bulldogs would score in all but one inning of game number one.
They would strike first in the bottom of the first with a run and would reciprocate that output in the bottom of the second with another run scored.
The Bulldogs would be scoreless in the third, but then would put the run-rule into effect with a six-run bottom of the fourth inning.
The Golden Eagles would go down in order in the top of the fifth, falling in the opening game of the twin bill.
The Golden Eagles would go without a hit in the game, but they did leave two runners on the bases.
Alexa Guilford (So., P, Crystal City, Manitoba) would pick up the loss in the game, going 2.0 innings of work, giving up two earned runs on five hits.
Evie Stuck (Jr., P, Papillion, Neb.) gave up six runs in relief, just one of those runs were earned.
Game Two
The Bulldogs would score an early run in the bottom of the first inning off of
Thayda Houser (Sr., P, Seymour, Iowa), for a 1-0 lead.
The Golden Eagles would answer back nicely in the second. The Golden Eagles would get a pair of hits from
Rayna French (Fr., C, La Salle, Manitoba) and
Irelyn Spencer (R-Fr., IF, Rapid City, S.D.). Ruth Frieberg (So., OF, Hopkins, Minn.) would give the Golden Eagles the third hit of the inning and the lead, with a two RBI double, scoring
Reagan Emerick (R-Jr., MIF, Macomb, Ill.) and Spencer.
The Bulldogs would answer right back in the bottom of the inning, scoring five straight runs for a 6-2 lead.
UMD would add some insurance in the bottom of the fourth with a three-run home run, making it 9-2 in favor of the Bulldogs, which would also be the final.
French and Freiberg each collected two hits. Freiberg reached base all three times in the game. Spencer and
Whitnee Curry (Jr., MIF/OF, Lincoln, Neb.) added a hit, as well. The maroon and gold left nine runners on base in the second game.
The Golden Eagles had three pitchers pitch in the game, started by Houser. Houser falls to 2-8 on the season, giving up six runs, just one of which were earned, on six hits. Guilford and
Kailee Pollard (Jr., P, Marshalltown, Iowa) each pitched two innings in the game.
What's Next
The Golden Eagles will be back at home this weekend for a pair of doubleheaders, starting with Wayne State College on Saturday at 12 P.M.
