Minnesota Crookston Baseball Earns 11-1 Victory to Open Series with USF

AUBURNDALE, Fla. - Caden Headlee (R-Jr., OF, Fargo, N.D.) hit a three-run home run in the fourth inning to help propel the University of Minnesota Crookston to a series-opening win over the University of Sioux Falls 11-1. Headlee's bat combined with the pitching of Jake Osowski (R-Sr., RHP, East Grand Forks, Minn.), who picked up the win.

Minnesota Crookston improved to 5-6 (2-3 NSIC) with Friday night's win in the NSIC series. The Golden Eagles have won the last two games in the series. The University of Sioux Falls dropped to 5-4 (0-1 NSIC) with the loss. The two squads will play three more games this weekend.

Osowski moved to 2-1 with Friday's win at Lake Myrtle Park in Auburndale, Fla. Osowski pitched six innings, allowing no runs on two hits. Osowski struck out five, and walked three. Isaac Wensloff (So., RHP, Roseau, Minn.) pitched one inning, allowing one run on one hit.

Reese Gaber started for the Cougars, allowing two earned runs on seven hits in four innings. Gaber struck out four and walked one. Derek Lundgren pitched a scoreless inning for USF. Jake Pruchniak allowed four runs in 1.1 innings, while Reid Barnard walked three, but didn't allow an earned run.

The Golden Eagles picked up 11 runs on eight hits. Headlee guided the U of M Crookston, going 2-of-3, with three RBIs and three runs scored. Headlee is hitting .467, leading the team this season. Jake Hjelle (R-Sr., OF/1B, East Grand Forks, MInn.), the reigning NCWBA National Player of the Year, went 2-of-3, with an RBI. Danny Wensloff (Sr., OF/C, Roseau, Minn.) was 1-of-4, with two RBIs, and a run scored. Josh Dykhoff (So., RHP/1B, Wadena, Minn.) was 1-of-3, with two RBIs, and two runs scored. Sawyer Satrom (R-So., IF, Portland, N.D.) finished 1-of-3, with an RBI, and two runs scored.

At the plate, USF picked up hits from David Swanson, Brady Klehr, and Tyler Cate. They were held to three hits Friday. 

The Golden Eagles took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Hjelle singled to left center to plate Dykhoff to give the U of M Crookston a 1-0 advantage. A Teddy Giefer (Sr., 1B, Courtland, Minn.) sacrifice fly scored Headlee to move the lead to 2-0.

The score remained at 2-0 before the Golden Eagles broke the game open in the fourth. Wensloff hit an RBI base-knock to score Satrom. Dykhoff then hit a single to plate Kobe Senn (R-So., IF, Fargo, N.D.) to widen the gap to 4-0. Minnesota Crookston extended the advantage to 7-0 with Headlee's three-run home run over the fence in left center, scoring himself, Dykhoff, and Wensloff.

USF got a run back in the seventh when Swanson doubled to drive in Cate. Wensloff pitched out of further damage to keep the score at 7-1.

Minnesota Crookston got the run-rule win by scoring four runs in the bottom of the seventh. Satrom walked with the bases loaded to score Headlee and push the lead to 8-1. Giefer scored on a passed ball to make the tally 9-1. Wensloff walked with the bases loaded, scoring Kodi Miller (Jr., C, Grand Rapids, Minn.) to widen the gap to 10-1. The Golden Eagles won the game 11-1 when Dykhoff walked with the bases juiced, plating Satrom.

Minnesota Crookston will play a doubleheader against Sioux Falls Saturday, March 9 1:45 and 4:45 p.m. C.T. at Lake Myrtle Park in Auburndale, Fla.
