Topeka, Kan. – After falling in a one run affair to Fort Hays State last night, Minnesota Crookston softball was set for a twin bill against Emporia State and host school Washburn on Saturday.
Emporia State used a huge third inning, scoring seven runs, catapulting the Hornets to a 9-1 win in game one in five innings.
In game two, the Ichabods would also use a big inning, scoring six runs in the bottom of the first inning and eight overall in an 8-0 win in five innings over the Golden Eagles.
Game One
Both teams would go scoreless in the opening two frames, but the Hornets would put up a crooked number in the third.
ESU would score seven runs in the inning, highlighted by three RBI doubles and a pair of RBI singles, for the 7-0 lead.
ESU would add on another run in the bottom of the fourth with a two RBI single.
The Golden Eagles would need two runs to extend the game in the top of the fifth, but they would get half of that, scoring on a wild pitch, allowing
Emerson Thompson (R-So., C, Lincoln, Neb,) to cross home plate, making it 9-1 in favor of the Hornets. That would also be the final tally.
The Golden Eagles had one hit in the game, which came off the bat of
Ruth Freiberg (So., OF, Hopkins, Minn.), who went 1-1 on the day.
Alexa Guilford (So., P, Crystal City, Manitoba) fell to 0-1 on the season, after allowing four earned runs on four hits.
Charlotte Dombrowski (So., P/OF, Valparaiso, Ind.) came in for relief and allowed three runs, two of which were earned, recording two outs.
Kailee Pollard (Jr., P, Marshalltown, Iowa) also came in for relief and gave up two runs and struck out a hitter.
Game Two
Washburn would use a huge first inning and would play small ball in the bottom of the first to jump out to a 6-0 lead.
The Golden Eagles would try to answer in the top of the second as Freiberg would walk and
Emilee Haggadone (So., C, Lincoln, Neb.) would single, but the Golden Eagles would leave a pair on in the second inning.
Washburn would score two more runs in the bottom of the second inning for an 8-0 lead.
The Golden Eagles wouldn't be able to scrape home a run, falling 8-0.
The Golden Eagles had three hits, led by two from
Shaelyn Grant (Sr., C/OF, Grand Junction, Colo.) and one from Haggadone.
Evie Stuck (Jr., P, Papillion, Neb.) fell to 1-1 in the circle, giving up eight runs, six of which were earned, on nine hits, while striking out a pair. Guilford pitched in relief of Stuck and pitched well, not allowing a hit in 1.1 innings of work.
