Winona State Scores Two Second-Half Goals to Defeat Golden Eagles 2-0

CROOKSTON, Minn. - Winona State University scored two goals in the second half to pick up a 2-0 victory over the University of Minnesota Crookston soccer team Sunday, October 6 in Crookston, Minn. The Golden Eagles kept a clean sheet for the first 52 minutes. The Warriors scored twice in the final 38 minutes to pick up the victory.

The Golden Eagles dropped to 1-7-1 (1-4 NSIC) with Sunday's loss. Winona State improved to 3-4-1 (2-4 NSIC) with the win. The Golden Eagles are in a three-way tie for 13th with University of Sioux Falls, and Minnesota State University Moorhead. The Golden Eagles defeated USF earlier this season, and play MSU Moorhead this week.

Minnesota Crookston finished with five shots, two on goal. Winona State notched 16 shots, with 13 on goal. The Warriors controlled the pace of play in the second half, along with possession. Winona State notched 13 shots to zero for the Golden Eagles in the second 45 minutes. Minnesota Crookston outshot the Warriors 5-3 in the opening stanza.

Brooklyn Fischbach (Sr., F, South St. Paul, Minn.) guided the Golden Eagles with three shots, one on goal. Greta Saylor (Sr., MF, New Brighton, Minn.) had two shots, one on goal. The Warriors were propelled by Madison Watts off the bench, with five shots, three on frame.

After a scoreless first 52 minutes, Winona State broke through in the 53rd minute as they were able to find their way up the left wing of the defense. Kyleigh Jannisch played in a beautiful ball where Chloe Turner finished for her first goal of the season for the Warriors. Winona State put the game away in the 81st minute off a set piece with a helper from Jacey Sturek, finding defender Quinn Williams for the finish. 

The Golden Eagles had the first flurry of chances in the first 10 minutes, all coming from Fischbach. Saylor had the final two opportunities of the first frame, but Minnesota Crookston was unable to generate solid opportunities in the second half. The Golden Eagles were unable to get much going through the midfield, as the majority of the action in the second half happened in the Minnesota Crookston defensive end.

Jordan Metz (Fr., GK, Lino Lakes, Minn.) had a clean sheet in the first half, but allowed two goals in the second 45. Metz finished with 11 saves. Alyson Jumper had the shutout, with no goals allowed. Jumper notched two saves. 

The Golden Eagles will play Minnesota State University Moorhead Friday, October 11 at 3 p.m., for the Highway 75 Rivalry Rock in Moorhead, Minn.
