Minnesota Crookston Women's Basketball Falls to Mavericks at Home

CROOKSTON, Minn. - Minnesota State University picked up a 100-49 win over the University of Minnesota Crookston women's basketball team Saturday, January 13. Minnesota State's stifling full-court press was the story of Saturday's contest as the Golden Eagles struggled with the defensive pressure. Minnesota Crookston committed 42 turnovers, which led to 48 points off turnovers for the Mavericks.

Minnesota State improved to 12-4 (9-1 NSIC) with the win. Minnesota Crookston continues their best start since the 2018-19 season despite the loss. The Golden Eagles picked up the split this weekend, with a win over Winona State University Friday. The Golden Eagles have a 9-7 (6-4 NSIC) record. The Mavericks lead the NSIC standings, while Minnesota Crookston is currently tied for sixth in the standings.

The Golden Eagles were led by 17 points from Emma Miller (So., G, Albertville, Minn.). Janie Tormanen (So., F/C, Menagha, Minn.) finished with 11 points. Olivia Walsh (Fr., F, Austin, Minn.) tallied 10 points and six boards, while Nicole Hernandez (R-Jr., F/C, Oak Creek, Wis.) paced the team with 12 rebounds.

Minnesota Crookston shot 18-of-50 for 36.0 percent. The Golden Eagles went 4-of-19 for 21.1 percent from beyond the arc, while they were 9-of-15 for 60.0 percent from the line. Minnesota State outrebounded the Golden Eagles 50-44, including 25 offensive boards.

The Mavericks were guided by 25 points and six assists from Destinee Bursch. Joey Batt added 18 points and seven steals. Emily Herzberg finished with 18 points. Natalie Bremer chipped in seven points and six steals. Hannah Herzig and Grace Mueller each added 11 points.

Minnesota State went 36-of-92 for 39.1 percent from the field. They were 10-of-25 for 40.0 percent from behind the three-point line, and 18-of-23 from the foul line for 78.3 percent. The Mavericks had 20 assists to 11 turnovers, and picked up 23 steals.

Minnesota State started the game with a 17-10 lead after a pair of Batt free throws. The Golden Eagles countered with a 7-0 run, as a Walsh bucket with 4:26 left in the first quarter knotted the game 17-17. For the rest of the first stanza, and the entire second period Minnesota State outscored Minnesota Crookston 42-4 to take a 59-23 lead into the locker room.

The Mavericks outscored the Golden Eagles 41-26 in the second half to pick up the victory.
