Minnesota Crookston Baseball Sweeps St. Cloud State in Home Opening Series

CROOKSTON, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Crookston baseball team picked up their first-ever NSIC sweep of St. Cloud State University. The Golden Eagles edged the Huskies 4-3 with the game-tying run on third base in the first game. In the second tilt, UMN Crookston picked up the 5-3 win in the second tilt.

Minnesota Crookston improved to 22-14 (12-6 NSIC) with Thursday's sweep. They are sitting in third place in the NSIC standings. St. Cloud State dropped to 17-13 (9-6 NSIC) and they now sit in sixth place. The Golden Eagles had only ever swept the Huskies in non-conference play, defeating the Huskies in a series March 7 and 8 in Fort Scott, Kan. The games marked the first at home this season for the Golden Eagles. Minnesota Crookston is just seven wins away from their program record of 28 wins, set in 2019.

Game One
The Golden Eagles picked up the 4-3 win in the second tilt as Jake Dykhoff (R-Sr., RHP, Wadena, Minn._ picked up his first save of the season. He got two crucial outs in the top of the seventh with the game-tying run on third base. Dykhoff went two innings, allowing two earned runs on four hits. He struck out two and had no walks.

Matt Nelson (R-Sr., RHP, Afton, Minn.) had a great outing On the bump for the Golden Eagles. He pitched a two-hit shutout over five innings. Nelson struck out four and had no walks.

Minnesota Crookston was lifted by home runs from Teddy Giefer (Jr., 1B, Courtland, Minn.) and Mike Hallquist (Jr., 3B, Fargo, N.D.  Hallquist was 2-of-3, with an RBI and a run scored. Jake Hjelle (R-Jr., OF/1B, East Grand Forks, Minn.) went 1-of-3, with an RBI. Giefer was 1-of-3, with an RBI and a run scored. Caden Headlee (Jr., OF, Fargo, N.D.) finished 1-of-3, with an RBI.
Sam Riola suffered the loss after allowing three earned runs over six innings. He allowed six hits. Riola struck out 10 and walked two.

The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first with a Hjelle triple to plate Josh Dykhoff (Fr., 1B/RHP, Wadena, Minn.).

Minnesota Crookston pushed their advantage to 2-0 in the third when Headlee singled in Josh Dykhoff.

UMN Crookston widened the gap to 3-0 with Hallquist's home run, his 12th of the season.

St. Cloud State responded in the sixth with a two-run shot from Riola, plating himself, and Mitchell Gumbko.

The Golden Eagles added a security run in the sixth with Giefer's fourth home run of the season.

St. Cloud State looked to rally in the seventh. Drew Beier singled with one out and Noah Dehne scored on a fielding error in center field to bring the Huskies within 4-3. Jake Dykhoff was able to retire the final two batters to preserve the win for the Golden Eagles.

Game Two
Minnesota Crookston made it a sweep Thursday with a 5-3 victory in the second tilt. The Golden Eagles picked up strong pitching over the nine innings. Josh Dykhoff picked up the win, tossing five innings and allowing just two runs on five hits. Dykhoff struck out three and walked one. Brody Sorenson (Jr., RHP, Grand Forks, N.D.) was clutch out of the bullpen, allowing no runs on two hits over three innings. Conner Richardson (R-Sr., RHP, Grand Forks, N.D.) closed it out for his third save this season, allowing an unearned run on one hit.

Minnesota Crookston showcased their power in the win as they blasted three home runs. The Golden Eagles are second in the NSIC with 49 home runs as a squad. Hallquist and Hjelle continued to go toe-to-toe in the NSIC home run race. The pair are the co-leaders in the NSIC with 13 home runs. Hjelle hit two in game two, while Hallquist hit one. Both had two for the day. Hjelle finished 2-of-3, with two RBIs and two runs scored. Hallquist was 1-of-4, with a run and two runs scored. Josh Dykhoff finished 1-of-3, with two runs scored. Ben Goelz (Jr., OF, Maple Lake, Minn.) was 1-of-3, with an RBI.

Luke Tupy suffered the loss after allowing four runs on four hits in six innings. Tupy struck out nine and walked three. Grady Fuchs pitched two innings in relief, allowing one run on one hit.
The Huskies jumped on the scoreboard first with a two-run shot from Riola, bringing in himself, and Sawyer Smith.

Minnesota Crookston knotted the score 4-4 in the fourth with a two-run blast from Hallquist, bringing in himself, and Josh Dykhoff. Hjelle followed suit with back-to-back home runs for the Golden Eagles, giving UMN Crookston the 3-2 edge.

The Golden Eagles widened the gap to 4-2 in the sixth with a Goelz single to left center, scoring Josh Dykhoff.

Minnesota Crookston pushed the lead to 5-2 with Hjelle's second home run of the game.

St. Cloud State attempted to rally in the top of the ninth. Drew Beier scored on a John Nett groundout to pull within 5-3. However, Richardson got Smith to fly out with Gumbko on third, as the Golden Eagles picked up the 5-3 victory.

The Golden Eagles will face Bemidji State University Sunday, April 16 at 1 and 3 p.m., and Monday, April 17 at 12 p.m. The games were relocated to Crookston, Minn., due to better field conditions in Crookston.
