Minnesota Crookston Scores Six in the Ninth Frame to Defeat Missouri-St. Louis 8-2

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The University of Minnesota Crookston baseball team picked up a 8-2 victory over the University of Missouri-St. Louis for the series split. The Golden Eagles scored six runs in the top of the ninth propelled by a two RBI double from Mike Hallquist (Jr., 3B, Fargo, N.D.).

The Golden Eagles improved to 3-5 with Sunday's victory. They split the series 2-2 with the Tritons. Missouri-St. Louis falls to 4-8 with the loss.

Matt Nelson (R-Sr., RHP, Afton, Minn.) put forth an outstanding outing on the bump. The experienced hurler tossed six innings, allowing just one run on one hit. Nelson struck out five and had no walks. Conner Richardson (R-Sr., RHP, Grand Forks, N.D.) got the win in relief after throwing three innings and allowing no earned runs on two hits. Richardson struck out two.
Minnesota Crookston was lifted by Hallquist, who went 3-of-5, with two RBIs, and a run scored. Ben Goelz (Jr., OF, Maple Lake, Minn.) finished 3-of-5, with two RBIs, and a run scored. Josh Dykhoff (Fr., RHP/1B, Wadena, Minn.) went 2-of-5, with an RBI, and a run scored. Christian Norby (Jr., OF, Ashby, Minn.) finished 2-of-3, with a run scored.

Brady Krile suffered the loss in relief, after allowing four runs on three hits. He walked one. Nick Torres started the game and tossed seven innings, allowing two earned runs, on eight hits. Torres struck out eight and had no walks.

The bats for the Tritons were led by Brandon Olion, who was 2-of-3, with a run scored. Leighton Keller finished 1-of-4, with a run scored.

Missouri-St. Louis broke the 0-0 tie in the bottom of the second when Keller scored on a Carson Holin groundout.

Minnesota Crookston took the 2-1 advantage in the fourth when Goelz doubled down the line, plating Jake Hjelle (R-Jr., OF/1B, East Grand Forks, Minn.), and Josh Dykhoff.

Missouri-St. Louis tied the game 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh when Olion scored on a throwing error.

The score remained tied until the top of the ninth when the Golden Eagles broke through for six runs. UMN Crookston broke the tie and moved to 3-2 when Mitch Goodwin (Jr., SS, Prior Lake, Minn.) was walked with the bases loaded, scoring Goelz. The Golden Eagles extended their lead to 4-2 when Matt Nunn (Sr., C, Edina, Minn.) singled to left field, plating Sawyer Satrom (R-Fr., IF, Portland, N.D.). UMN Crookston pushed the lead to 5-2 with a two RBI double from Hallquist, driving in Goodwin, and Norby. The Golden Eagles widened the gap to 7-2 when Josh Dykhoff hit an infield single, scoring Nunn. The final run of the stanza scored on a Hjelle sacrifice fly, scoring Hallquist.

Richardson was able to retire the Tritons in the bottom of the ninth to preserve the 8-2 win.

The Golden Eagles will open their trip to the Sunshine State as they will compete in the RussMatt Invitational. Minnesota Crookston will play West Virginia Wesleyan College Saturday, March 4 at 1 p.m. in Winter Haven, Fla.
