First Quarter Struggles Doom Golden Eagles in 75-60 Loss to Northern State

CROOKSTON, Minn. – Northern State University outscored the University of Minnesota Crookston women's basketball team 25-9 in the first quarter on their way to a 75-60 victory Saturday, February 11 at Gary Senske Court at Lysaker Gymnasium. The Golden Eagles outscored the Wolves 51-50 in the final three quarters, but it would not be enough to overcome the early deficit.

Minnesota Crookston falls to 10-16 (9-11 NSIC) with Saturday's loss. They are now a game behind Northern State and Minnesota State University Moorhead, who are tied for fourth in the NSIC North. The Golden Eagles currently hold a two-game edge on Minot State University for the final seed in the NSIC North for the NSIC Tournament. The final two games will be crucial for all four schools in terms of who makes it and for seeding. Northern State improved to 15-11 (10-10 NSIC) with the win. The two squads split the season series.

Emma Miller (Fr., G, Albertville, Minn.) guided the Golden Eagle with 21 points on 9-of-20 from the field, and 3-of-10 from beyond the arc. Alex Page (So., F, Grand Forks, N.D.) added 11 points and three assists. Bren Fox (R-Sr., F/C, Norwood Young America, Minn.), competing on Senior Day, notched nine points and nine rebounds. Fox is 31 rebounds away from the school record for rebounds, set by Isieoma Odor, who was in attendance at Saturday's game. Janie Tormanen (Fr., F, Menahga, Minn.) came off the bench for eight points and six rebounds.
The Golden Eagles shot 21-of-57 from the field for 36.8 percent. They were 8-of-22 for 36.4 percent from beyond the arc. UMN Crookston went 10-of-13 for 76.9 percent from the stripe. The Golden Eagles were controlled on the glass 42-30, including 13 offensive boards for the Wolves.

Northern State went 30-of-64 for 46.9 percent from the field. They were only 3-of-15 from beyond the arc for 20.0 percent. They were strong at the line, finishing 12-of-14 for 85.7 percent.

Laurie Rogers guided the Wolves with 23 points. Rianna Fillipi added 19 points. Kailee Oliverson finished with a double-double of 12 points and 11 boards, while Alayna Benike had 11 points.

The Golden Eagles were within 6-5 early in the first quarter following a Page trey. Northern State responded with a 9-2 run to extend their lead to 15-7 following a Fillipi jumper. UMN Crookston got the deficit down to 15-9 with a Miller jumper. However, the Wolves came right back with a 10-0 run to end the quarter as they went into the quarter break with a 25-9 advantage.

Northern State pushed their lead out to 29-11 with a basket from Rogers. The Golden Eagles would get the deficit down to 14 after a pair of Fox free throws with 5:58 remaining. The Wolves were able to push back out to a 17-point lead after Rogers connected on a pair of free throws. UMN Crookston was able to take the Northern State lead down to 11 after a Miller jumper with 1:09 left in the quarter. However, a Benike three going into the half gave the Wolves a 38-24 lead in the locker room.

Minnesota Crookston opened the third quarter on a 7-3 run as they got the Northern State lead down to 42-31 after a Fox free throw with 6:34 remaining in the stanza. Northern State was able to fend off the charge and take the 60-42 advantage headed into the quarter break after a Rogers old-fashioned three-point play.

The Golden Eagles opened the fourth frame on a 5-0 run, as a Taryn Frazer (Fr., G, Cass Lake, Minn.) triple, and a pair of Page free throws, took the Northern State lead down to 60-47. That would be as close as Minnesota Crookston would get down the stretch, as they fell 75-60.

Saturday was Senior Night for the Golden Eagles. They honored Fox and Veronica Schwartz (Sr., G/F, Parkers Prairie, Minn.) prior to the game. Both players started for UMN Crookston.
