Lynn Uses Third Quarter Run to Defeat Golden Eagle Women's Basketball 72-57

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. - The University of Minnesota Crookston women's basketball team allowed Lynn University to go on an 18-5 run in the third quarter as they 72-57 at the Barry University Invitational in Miami Shores, Fla. The Golden Eagles led 33-30 at halftime over the Fighting Knights, who went to the NCAA Tournament last season.

Minnesota Crookston dropped to 3-3 (1-0 NSIC) with Friday's loss at the Health & Sports Center. The Golden Eagles are off to their best start since going 5-1 to open the 2018-19 season. The Fighting Knights improved to 3-1 with the victory.

The Golden Eagles were guided by Emma Miller (So., G, Alberville, Minn.), with 17 points and nine rebounds. Miller has scored over 15 points in every game this season, and has five games with nine or more rebounds this year. Olivia Walsh (IFr., G/F, Austin, Minn.) had 10 points. Hope Dudycha (R-Fr., G, Austin, Minn.) notched eight points, as did Taryn Frazer (So., G, Cass Lake, Minn.). Dudycha led the team with four assists in the game.

Minnesota Crookston went 20-of-55 for 36.4 percent from the field. They were 5-of-18 for 27.8 percent from beyond the arc, and 12-of-18 for 66.7 percent from the foul line. Minnesota Crookston had seven assists to 19 turnovers. They were outrebounded by Lynn 44-28, including 12 offensive rebounds.

Lynn looked to Makayla Hemingway for 17 points. Ella Fiore added a double-double with 15 points and 10 boards. Trinity Mocadlo finished with 12 points. Carly Stroemel added 12 points and seven boards, while Marianna Klavina came off the bench for 10 boards.

The Fighting Knights went 30-of-61 from the field for 49.2 percent. They shot 5-of-10 from beyond the arc for 50.0 percent, and 7-of-12 for 58.3 percent from the foul line. Lynn dominated the paint scoring 48 points, compared to just 24 for Minnesota Crookston.

The two teams were tied 7-7 with 6:36 left in the first quarter after Hope Dudycha drained a three-pointer. The shot ignited a 10-0 run as a pair of Miller free throws gave the Golden Eagles a 14-7 advantage. Lynn responded with a 6-0 run as a Mocadlo jumper trimmed the deficit to 14-13 going into the quarter break.

The Golden Eagles pushed the lead to 19-15 after a pair of Natalie Mikrot (So., G, Willow River, Minn.) free throws with 8:27 remaining in the second stanza. Lynn countered with a 6-2 run to knot the game up 21-21 with a pair of Hemingway free throws. The two teams continued to go back-and-forth with Stroemel knotting the game at 30-30 with 55 seconds left before the break. U of M Crookston ended the half with a Miller triple to go into the locker room ahead 33-30.

Minnesota Crookston held a 41-38 lead after a pair of Miller free throws with 7:41 left in the third quarter. The Fighting Knights responded with a 7-0 run to take the 45-41 lead on a Fiore jumper. Minnesota Crookston pulled within 45-44 on a Walsh bucket with 3:57 remaining in the frame. Lynn came right back with a 7-0 run utilizing a Hemingway trey to push the lead to 52-44. A Hemingway lay-in put Lynn ahead 56-46 going into the quarter break turning the tide of the game.

A Walsh jumper cut the lead for the Fighting Knights to 56-48 early in the fourth stanza. Lynn came back with a 5-0 run to push the advantage to 61-48. The Fighting Knights led 72-55 following a Hemingway triple with 1:04 left. The Golden Eagles closed within 72-57 on a Mikrot jumper, which would be the final tally.

Minnesota Crookston continues their trip in the Sunshine State Saturday, November 25 at 2 p.m. C.T. , at Barry University in Miami Shores, Fla.
