CROOKSTON, Minn. - The University of Minnesota Crookston women's basketball team faced the Crown College Polars on Gary Senske Court at Lysaker Gymnasium. The Golden Eagles had the upper hand in the match-up and outscored the Polars 91-46 by the final buzzer.
The Golden Eagles improved to 2-2 with Saturday's win. Crown College dropped 0-5 with the loss. Natalie Moynihan picked up her second career win as a head coach with the newly emerging win streak.
In this high scoring contest, Minnesota Crookston tallied up 91 points. Emma Miller (So., G, Albertville, Minn.) had a big game and led the scoring for the Golden Eagles with 18 points, seven assists, and 11 rebounds. Janie Tormanen (So., F/C, Menahga, Minn.) followed right behind her putting 15 points on the scoreboard. Two other Golden Eagles scored in double digits, with Olivia Walsh (Fr., G/F, Austin, Minn.) bagging 11 points, and Rayna Klejeski (Fr., F, Barnum, Minn.) racking up 13 points.
With a solid starting line-up, the Golden Eagles took charge of the game early when Miller widened the gap to 7-0 with a three pointer at the 2:15 mark of the first quarter. Minnesota Crookston controlled the first quarter, which ended with a score of 25-7.
In the second quarter, Minnesota Crookston led the game 45-21. The Golden Eagles pushed the lead from 18 points in the first quarter to 24 points by the end of the half.
The Polars were looking for a comeback, but the Golden eagles did not let up. Crown College had their best stretch in the second and third period where they notched 14 points in each quarter.
Crown College was led by McKenzie Latzke, who proved to be a threat to the Golden Eagles, and put up 15 points in these two quarters.
Latzke's efforts were not enough, as Minnesota Crookston knocked the lead up to 65-35 scoring another 20 points in this strong third period. Tormanen had two back-to-back layups early in the period to advance the Golden Eagles through the third. Klejeski also had a layup and nicked three free throw points off the Polars.
The Golden Eagles continued to have the edge on the court in the final period which they dominated, adding 26 points to the scoreboard for a final score of 91-46. Minnesota Crookston also had a strong defensive fourth quarter, allowing the Polars only 11 points.
Minnesota Crookston will face Minot State at home on Tuesday, Nov. 18 on the Gary Senske Court at Lysaker Gymnasium. They will look to expand on their two game win streak as they head into their first NSIC Conference match-up.
