MANKATO, Minn. - The University of Minnesota Crookston volleyball team was defeated 3-0 (25-15, 25-19, 25-14) Friday, October 26 at the Taylor Center. The Mavericks have won the last nine in the series.
Minnesota Crookston dropped to 3-18 (1-12 NSIC) with Friday's loss. The Mavericks improved to 11-10 (6-7 NSIC).
The Golden Eagles hit .088 for the match, with 30 kills and 21 errors. Minnesota Crookston was guided by Bailey Schaefer (Jr., OH/DS, Brandon, Minn.), with nine kills, and a .192 hitting percentage. Maya Jones (Fr., RS, New Braunfels, Texas) had nine kills, and hit .138. Mara Weisensel (Sr., MH, New Ulm, Minn.) added six kills, and hit .462.
Emma Malek (Fr., S/MH/RS, Plainfield, Ill.) was playing her first collegiate game at setter due to injury. Malek finished with 23 assists.
Defensively, Kailee Waasdorp (Fr., DS/Lib., West Fargo, N.D.) finished with 13 digs, Madison Carsten (Fr., OH, Wadena, Minn.) added nine.
Minnesota State was led by Elizabeth Dille with 12 kills. Sophie Tietz added eight, while Toryn Richards had six. The Mavericks hit .337, with 41 kills, and nine errors. Brooke Bolwerk finished with 26 assists.
Defensively, Ellie Kline led the team with 10 digs. The Mavericks finished with 18 block assists. Tietz led the block with seven, while Emily Kern notched six.
Set One
The Golden Eagles trailed 4-3 after a Tietz attack error. Minnesota State won the next two points to extend their lead to 6-3 after a Tietz kill. The Golden Eagles pulled within 6-4 with a kill from Megan Schoenfelder (Fr., MH, Zumbrota, Minn.). However, the Mavericks won three of the next four points to extend their lead to 9-5. The Golden Eagles pulled within 12-9 on another Schoenfelder kill. The Mavericks pushed their lead to 17-10 following three-straight Tietz service aces. The Golden Eagles trimmed the deficit to 19-14 after a Schaefer kill. Minnesota State closed the set on a 6-1 run in order to pick up the 25-15 win.
Set Two
Minnesota State took a 4-1 lead in set two after a Carsten attack error. The Golden Eagles responded and knotted the game at 4-4 after a Weisensel kill. The Mavericks responded and took the lead back 7-4 following a Tietz service ace. Minnesota Crookston pulled within 9-7 with a thunderous kill down the line from Jones. They continued their charge and trimmed the Maverick lead to 10-9 following a Schaefer kill. The Golden Eagles tied the set 10-10 after a Richards attack error. Minnesota State took the advantage 14-11 after a Carsten attack error. The Golden Eagles pulled within 18-16 with a Schaeder spike down the line. The Mavericks pushed the lead to 21-18 with a block from Tietz and Kiya Durant. The Golden Eagles got within 23-19 after a Jones kill. However, Minnesota State was able to move to 2-0 in the match with a 25-19 set two victory.
Set Three
Minnesota Crookston took the early 4-0 lead following back-to-back Malek service aces. The Mavericks pulled within 4-3 after a Durant kill, however Schoenfelder came back with a kill to give U of M Crookston a 5-3 lead. Minnesota State knotted the set 5-5 with an Emily Kern kill. The Mavericks took over the lead 6-5 after a Carsten attack error, but Jones came back with a kill to tie the set 6-6. Minnesota State took an 8-6 lead with a Dille kill. The Mavericks moved their lead to 13-8 after a Kline service ace. The Golden Eagles cut the deficit to 14-10 with a Schaefer kill.
