Minnesota Crookston Falls to Warriors on Homecoming Friday

Crookston, Minn. – Minnesota Crookston volleyball welcomed in Winona State for a Friday night NSIC and homecoming tilt. Winona State had just enough in set one and used big runs in sets two and three to sweep Minnesota Crookston (22-25, 17-25, 15-25).

The Golden Eagles fall to 3-16 (1-10 NSIC).

Set One
The Golden Eagles would get off to a fast 3-0 lead after kills from Maya Jones (Fr., OH, New Braunfels, Texas), Audrey Cariveau (So., OH, Kevil, Kent.) and Emma Malek (Fr., MH, Plainfield, Ill.).

The Warriors would score the next two, but the Golden Eagles would answer with a pair of their own for a 5-2 lead.

The set would be back-and-forth, but WSU would take a 13-9 lead. However, the Golden Eagles would answer after a pair of kills from Jones and a service ace from Dana Melby (R-Fr., S, Gonvick, Minn.).

A Kailee Waasdorp (Fr., DS, West Fargo, N.D.) service ace would give the maroon and gold a 20-19 lead.

The match would later be tied at 22, but Winona State would score the next three points for the set one win.

Set Two
Early on in the middle set, the Golden Eagles would once again jump out to an early lead, including a 3-0 run highlighted by some more strong swings from the freshman Jones.

The middle of the set would see the Warriors take a 18-13 lead, but Mara Weisensel (R-Sr., MH, New Ulm, Minn.) would collect a kill to cut the lead to just four.

Winona State would take a 23-15 lead, but Malek would help cut the lead to seven after another kill.

WSU would later go on to win the set by eight.

Set Three
The third set would be a little bit different than the opening two sets as the Warriors would control it early, jumping out to a 6-2 lead.

Minnesota Crookston would be helped by a pair of Warrior errors to cut the lead to 7-5.

The Golden Eagles would trail 16-10, but three straight points capped off by a Weisensel kill would get the Golden Eagles back within three.

Winona State would score seven straight points, giving them match point at 24-14. Weisensel would collect a kill, but the Warriors would eventually get that match point.

Individual Stats
Once again, Jones was outstanding, finishing with 11 kills on 30 total attacks. Weisensel added eight kills on 20 total attacks, while Cariveau and Malek finished with six and five kills, respectively.

Defensively, Waasdorp added 16 digs. Melby collected her eighth double-double of the season with 11 digs and 26 assists. Madison Carsten (Fr., OH, Wadena, Minn.) and Bailey Schaefer (Jr., DS, Brandon, Minn.) each finished with 10 digs.
