SMSU Uses the Deep Ball to Defeat Minnesota Crookston on Saturday

Crookston, Minn. --  Southwest Minnesota State used the three-point line to their advantage, making eight threes in the second half, 14 overall, to propel the Mustangs to a 17-point win in Crookston on Saturday night.

With the 75-58 win, the Mustangs improve to 13-8 (10-6 NSIC), while the Golden Eagles fall to 10-12 (9-7 NSIC).

The Mustangs would start the three-point barrage early, as Jenna Borchers cashed one in for an early 3-0 lead.

On the next possession, Emma Miller (Fr., G, Albertville, Minn.) would bury a three for the first points of her team-high 22 on the night.

From that point on, the Mustangs would gain a 16-9 lead, but back-to-back buckets from Alex Page (So., F, Grand Forks, N.D.) and Janie Tormanen (Fr., F, Menahga, Minn.) got the lead back to five at 16-11.

SMSU would lead 21-13 at the end of the first quarter.

The Golden Eagles would start to close the gap in the second quarter. SMSU would lead 29-21, but a jumper from Friday night's hero, Bren Fox (R-Sr., C, Norwood Young America, Minn.) and an old-fashioned three point play gave the Golden Eagles a deficit of just three at 29-26.

The Golden Eagles would head into the halftime break down by just three at 33-30.

The second half would be all Mustangs, who would jump out to a 15-point lead, propelled by the three ball.

Miller would get the Golden Eagles within seven midway through the third quarter. Taryn Frazer (Fr., G, Cass Lake, Minn.) would bury two free throws to cut the lead to 50-44, but that's as close as the Golden Eagles would get, falling by 17.

Miller led the way with 22, while Fox had 16 points and nine rebounds. Tormanen finished in double-digits for the second straight game, finishing with 11 points and three rebounds.

Minnesota Crookston will get back to NSIC North play next weekend as they make the trek west to North Dakota for a pair of games. Tip-off with the Marauders on Friday night is set for 7:30 P.M.
