WAYNE, Neb. – Wayne State College (Neb.) used 32 points from Jordan Janssen to defeat the University of Minnesota Crookston men's basketball team 91-62.
Minnesota Crookston falls to 1-19 (0-14 NSIC) with Saturday's loss at Rice Auditorium in Wayne, Neb. Wayne State improved to 14-6 (9-5 NSIC) with the victory.
The Golden Eagles had several runs in the game but were unable to make the ultimate charge to overcome the Wildcats on Saturday.
Xzavier Jones (Jr., G/F, Milwaukee, Wis.) led UMN Crookston with 18 points on 7-of-14 from the field. He added three assists.
Blaize Sagna (So., G, London, England) added 14 points and three helpers.
Jordan Mitchell (R-So., F, Columbus, Ohio) played valuable minutes off the bench with seven points and nine boards.
Matthew Allman (R-Jr., G/F, London, England) and
Chandler Meeks (Fr., G, Omaha, Neb.) each added six points.
Minnesota Crookston shot 21-of-57 from the field for 36.8 percent. They were 8-of-23 for 34.8 percent from beyond the arc. The Golden Eagles struggled at the stripe, where they were just 12-of-20 for 60.0 percent.
Wayne State looked to Janssen with 32 points and seven boards. Nate Mohr added 18 points, including four treys. Justin Eagins and Elijah Watson each chipped in 11. The Wildcats dominated the glass 43-24. They shot 32-of-59 for 54.2 percent from the field.
The Wildcats got out to a 14-3 advantage following back-to-back old-fashioned three-point plays from Janssen. Janssen set the Wayne State scoring record with his 10
th point of the game to put the Wildcats ahead 16-3. Minnesota Crookston cut the deficit to 18-12 following a
Rambo Badyal (Sr., G, Kelowna, British Columbia) jumper with 13:30 left in the first half. A Badyal trey brought UMN Crookston within six (23-17) with 11:30 remaining in the stanza. Wayne State fired back as Mohr drained a triple to widen the gap to 28-19 with just under 10 minutes remaining in the half. The Wildcats extended their lead to 33-19 with a Janssen bucket. The Wildcats went ahead 45-24 after an old-fashioned three-point play from Watson with 2:30 remaining in the first half. The Golden Eagles closed the first half on a 7-0 run as an Allman triple trimmed the Wayne State lead to 45-31 going into the locker room.
The Golden Eagles opened the second half with a trey from Allman to trim the deficit to 45-34. Wayne State responded and pushed the advantage back out to 49-34 after a pair of Janssen free throws. A Jones triple brought the Golden Eagles within 52-39 with 16 minutes remaining in the tilt. Minnesota Crookston used a 4-0 run after Sagna hit free throws following a technical foul, and Jones got a bucket to trim the deficit to 56-47 with 12:37 left in the game. Wayne State followed with a 9-0 run culminating with a Janssen basket to push the lead to 65-47 with under 10 minutes left in the contest. The Wildcats took a 75-53 lead following an Eagins floater and came away with the 91-62 lead as Minnesota Crookston was unable to make the final push.
The Golden Eagles return home to host the University of Sioux Falls Friday, January 27 at 5:30 p.m. at Gary Senske Court at Lysaker Gymnasium.
