Minnesota Crookston Hockey Picks Up Clean Sheet with 7-0 Win Over St. Cloud State

CROOKSTON, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Crookston hockey team won their fifth-consecutive game with a 7-0 victory over St. Cloud State University Saturday, January 14 at the Crookston Sports Center.

The Golden Eagles improved to 16-2 (10-2 WCCHA) with Saturday's win over the Huskies. UMN Crookston swept the Huskies. Minnesota Crookston is currently ranked 19th in the nation, and fifth in the region. St. Cloud State dropped to 0-20 (0-10 WCCHA).

The Golden Eagles put up their first clean sheet of the season. Braden Schmitz (So., G, Devils Lake, N.D.) played 31:17 in between the pipes. He allowed no goals, with five saves. Wyatt Olsonawski (Fr., Hallock, Minn.) made his debut as a Golden Eagle in the final 28:43. Olsonawski joined the team at semester. He made five saves.

Gunner Ferrier (Jr., D, Baudette, Minn.) notched one goal and two assists. Tyler Zahradka (Jr., F, Grand Forks, N.D.) also added a goal and two assists. Dylan Borseth (Sr., F, Williston, N.D.) added two assists. Parker Sunderland (So., D, Bagley, Minn.) had a goal and an assist. Dylan Neubauer (So., F, Thompson, N.D.), Zach Larson (Jr., F, Grand Forks, N.D.), Tristan Morneault (Jr., F, Dieppe, New Brunswick), and Sam Baxter (So., D, Grafton, N.D.) all chipped in goals. Jake Huska (Jr., D, Snow Lake, Manitoba) and Logan Syrup (So., F, Park River, N.D.) each added assists.

In net, Eric Schmidley allowed seven goals. He made 52 saves. Chris Hekrdle came off the bench and allowed no goals.

Minnesota Crookston jumped on the scoreboard first in the sixth minute of the first period when Larson put the break in the basket with assists from Borseth and Ferrier. In the 10th minute, Neubauer tallied a goal for the Golden Eagles.

Fifteen seconds into the second period, Zahradka scored on a helper from Ferrier to extend the lead to 3-0. At the 3:12 mark of the second period, Ferrier scored off assists from Borseth and Sunderland. Just over a minute later, Baxter found the back of the net off a Zahradka assist to make it 5-0.

Just 47 seconds into the third period, UMN Crookston made it 6-0 with a goal from Morneault off assists from Zahradka and Huska. At the 3:56 mark of the third period, Sunderland scored off a Logan Syrup apple to push the final tally to 7-0.

Minnesota Crookston will face-off with top ranked University of Mary in Mandan, N.D., at 2 p.m.
