MARQUETTE, Mich. – Northern Michigan University defeated the University of Minnesota Crookston 6-0 Sunday, September 4 at the NMU Soccer Field in Marquette, Mich. The Wildcats scored four goals in the first half and added two in the second half to pick up the shutout victory.
Minnesota Crookston fell to 1-2 with the loss, while Northern Michigan moved to 3-0-1. The Wildcats are receiving votes in the national poll. They tied with defending NSIC Champion Bemidji State University 3-3 Friday.
The Golden Eagles were limited to one shot in the contest, while the Wildcats had 22 shots, with 15 shots on goal. Northern Michigan was propelled by Hannah Kastamo with five shots on goal. Natalie Stamfly and Brooke Pietila each had two shots on goal.
Northern Michigan finished with 10 corner kicks, while Minnesota Crookston had two.
The Wildcats jumped on the scoreboard in the sixth minute when Justina L'Esperance scored off a Brenna Musser assist. In the 11
th minute, Pietila notched a tally off an assist from Musser. Five minutes later, Stampfly scored off yet another Musser helper. In the 40
th minute of the game, Caitlyn Trombley notched a penalty kick goal.
In the second half, Hannah Kastamo added a goal off a Brooklyn Wiltzius assist. Kastamo scored another goal in the 60
th minute.
The loan shot for the Golden Eagle came from
Morgan Laplante (Sr., F, De Soto, Kan.).
Emma Stempien (So., GK, Plymouth, Mich.) made her first start in goal, allowing six goals and notching nine saves.
Shenae Kreps started in goal, allowing no goals in 45:28, while Ava Wilberding came on for 44:32.
Minnesota Crookston returns home Friday, September 9 to battle for the Highway 75 Rivalry Rock against Minnesota State University Moorhead at 4 p.m.
