Minnesota Crookston Falls in Doubleheader to St. Cloud State Friday

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Crookston baseball team was defeated in a pair of games Friday, April 29 at Joe Faber Field in St. Cloud, Minn. The Golden Eagles fell 10-0 in game one, and 3-2 in the final tilt.

Minnesota Crookston fell to 15-26 (7-15 NSIC) with Friday's losses. St. Cloud State improved to 32-10 (24-4 NSIC) with the wins.

Game One
The Huskies opened up the doubleheader with a 10-0 win over the Golden Eagles, propelled by eight runs in the bottom of the fourth.

Jake Dykhoff (R-Jr., RHP, Wadena, Minn.) got the start and allowed seven runs in four innings. Dykhoff struck out four, and walked one. Jackson Schneider (R-Jr., RHP, Forest Lake, Minn.) came on in relief and allowed two runs, on two hits, in one inning. Joey Greco (R-Jr., RHP, Half Moon Bay, Calif.) pitched a scoreless inning in the sixth.

The win for the Huskies went to Luke Tupy, who pitched a complete game, no-hit shutout. Tupy struck out 13, and walked one.

St. Cloud State was led by Tate Wallat, who went 2-of-4, with two RBIs, and a run scored. Ethan Navratil went 2-of-3, with an RBI, and a run scored. Max Gamm finished 2-of-3, with an RBI, and two runs scored. Mitchell Gumbko finished 1-of-2, with two RBIs, and two runs scored. Gumbko hit a two-run home run in the sixth for the Huskies.

Game Two
The Huskies edged the Golden Eagles 3-2 in the second game of the doubleheader. St. Cloud State was lifted by home runs from Sam Riola and Cameron Vollmer.

Alex Koep (So., LHP, Parkers Prairie, Minn.) got the start and allowed three runs, on five hits, over seven innings. Koep struck out five, and walked two. Jake Osowski (R-So., RHP, East Grand Forks, Minn.) tossed one inning, allowing no runs, on one hit.

Riley Ahern picked up the win in six innings. Ahern struck out 10, and had no walks. He allowed one run, on three hits. Nick Brauns picked up the save for the Huskies.

Minnesota Crookston was held to two hits. Brad Morris (R-Sr., OF, Auckland, New Zealand) went 1-of-3. Jake Hjelle (R-So., 3B/OF, East Grand Forks, Minn.) finished 1-of-3, with a run scored. Ben Thoma (R-Sr., C/3B, Clearbrook, Minn.) went 1-of-4, with an RBI.

The Huskies looked to Riola, who went 2-of-3, with two RBIs, and a run scored. Wallat went 1-of-3, with a run scored. Vollmer finished 1-of-3, with an RBI, and a run scored.

St. Cloud State opened up the scoring in the bottom of the third. Riola hit a ball over the fence in left center, plating himself, and Wallat to make it 2-0.

The Golden Eagles got a run back in the fourth with a Thoma single, driving in Hjelle (R-So., 3B/OF, East Grand Forks, Minn.).

The Huskies widened their gap to 3-1 with a solo home run to left field in the bottom of the seventh from Cameron Vollmer.

UMN Crookston opened up the top of the eighth inning with Paxton Nelson (Jr., OF, Spicer, Minn.) reaching on a walk, and Morris being hit by a pitch. The Golden Eagles trimmed the deficit to 3-2 when Nelson scored on a wild pitch.

The Golden Eagles were unable to overcome the deficit in the final stanza, as St. Cloud State took the game 3-2.

UMN Crookston is slated to wrap up the series with St. Cloud State University Saturday, April 30 at 12 p.m. at Joe Faber Field.
