Minnesota Crookston Softball Concludes Spring Trip with 6-0 Loss to Saint Anselm

CLERMONT, Fla. – The University of Minnesota Crookston softball team concluded their trip to Florida with a 6-0 loss to Saint Anselm College Sunday, March 20 at Legends Way in Clermont, Fla. The Hawks scored five runs in the fourth, and one in the fifth in order to pick up the victory.

Minnesota Crookston dropped to 9-16 with Sunday's loss, while Saint Anselm improved to 7-8 on the season. The Golden Eagles finish their trip to the Sunshine State with a 2-6 mark.

Annjelica Moreno-Engelbrecht (Jr., RHP/UT, Oceanside, Calif.) got the start and went 3.1 innings, allowing five runs, on five hits, with a strikeout, and a walk. Moreno-Engelbrecht pitched three scoreless innings before running into trouble in the fourth. Nicole DeDen (Fr., RHP, Mission Viejo, Calif.) went 1.2 innings, allowing one run, on four hits. Kamryn Frisk (R-Sr., RHP, Anchorage, Alaska) came in and pitched a scoreless sixth inning, with just one hit allowed, and a strikeout.

Haile Hicks picked up the win for the Hawks, pitching a five-hit shutout. She struck out eight, and walked two in the complete game.

UMN Crookston had five hits for the game. The Golden Eagles were led by Ariana Gambala (So., UT, San Diego, Calif.), who went 1-of-2. Sydney Huwe (Fr., UT, Carver, Minn.) was 1-of-3, as were Alina Avalos (Jr., IF, Riverside, Calif.), Jordan Peterson (R-Sr., UT, Lakeville, Minn.), and Alyssa Stillman (Jr., 2B/SS, Hortonville, Wis.).

The Hawks were led by Ava Caputo, who went 1-of-2, with an RBI, and two runs scored. Bailey Cain was 2-of-3. Gracie O'Hara was 1-of-4, with a run scored. Julia Howse was 2-of-3, with two RBIs, and a run scored.

After a scoreless first three innings between the two teams, Saint Anselm broke out. The Hawks scored in the top of the first when Howse singled to drive in Caputo, and O'Hara. Gibbons scored on a wild pitch, Howse came into score after Peterson's throw bounced off Gibbons at the plate and went back to the backstop. Saint Anselm added one more run in the stanza as Kylie Fitzpatrick utilized a sacrifice fly to plate Moran to put the score at 5-0.
The Hawks pushed their advantage to 6-0 with a Caputo solo home run in the sixth.

Minnesota Crookston was unable to cut into the lead, as they fell 6-0.

The Golden Eagles are slated to open conference play Tuesday, March 29 at 2 and 4 p.m. at the UMN Crookston Softball Field in Crookston, Minn.
