Minnesota Crookston Hockey Opens WCCHA Tournament Friday Against Wisconsin-Eau Claire

CROOKSTON, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Crookston hockey program is set to compete at the Western Collegiate Club Association (WCCHA) Tournament Friday, February 11-Sunday, February 13 at the National Sports Center Super Rink in Blaine, Minn. The tournament marks the first postseason appearance for the Golden Eagles. UMN Crookston will be playing for the coveted Carla Berg Cup.

Minnesota Crookston has posted a 12-6-2 (7-3-2 WCCHA) mark. The Golden Eagles were most recently ranked 20th in the ACHA Division II Central Region. The top 14 teams will advance to the ACHA Division II Central Region Tournament February 25-27 at the Omni Center in Onalaska, Wis.

The Golden Eagles will open up the WCCHA Tournament Friday, February 11 at 9 p.m. at the Super Rink second arena against the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. The winner of the game will advance to play the winner of the second quarterfinal between Gustavus Adolphus College and Minnesota State University, Mankato Saturday, February 12 at 7:30 p.m. at the Super Rink first arena. The loser of Friday's game will move to the consolation bracket and will play the loser of Gustavus Adolphus and Minnesota State Saturday, February 12 at 8 p.m. on the Super Rink second arena.

Minnesota Crookston comes into the weekend as the sixth seed. Minnesota Crookston has been propelled by Nikolai Rajala (Fr., F, Coleraine, Minn.) with 13 goals and 17 assists for a team-high 30 points. Their top goal scorer has been Tyler Zahradka (So., F, Grand Forks, N.D.) with 22 goals and seven assists. Logan Syrup (Fr., F, Park River, N.D.) leads the team this season with 19 assists. 2020-21 ACHA Division II Second Team All-American Casey Kallock (Sr., D, Alvarado, Minn.) has seven goals and 16 assists, while Jackson Fuller (Fr., F, Bloomington, Minn.) comes in with four goals and 16 assists.
In goal, Braden Schmitz (Fr., G, Devils Lake, N.D.) has paced Minnesota Crookston with a 3.60 goals against average. Jared Aamold (Fr., G, Breckenridge, Minn.) has seen the second-most minutes in between the pipes. He has a 4.04 goals against average.

#3 Wisconsin-Eau Claire
Wisconsin-Eau Claire is 14-5-1 in the WCCHA this season. The Blugolds come into the weekend as the No. 3 seed. They have been led this season by Isaac Lindstrom with 17 goals and 23 assists. Martin Moioffer has also been a major offensive threat with 20 goals and 12 assists. Christian Bardarson comes in with 16 goals and 16 assists, while Adis Ultanbekov has 11 goals and eight assists.

In goal, the Blugolds look to Francisco Gomez with a 3.54 goals against average.

#2 Gustavus Adolphus
Gustavus Adolphus comes into the weekend with an 11-3-1 WCCHA mark. The Golden Gusties have been guided by Hunter Johnson with 14 goals and 10 assists. Porter Haney has also been crucial with nine goals and 11 assists. Peter Colby comes in with six goals and 14 assists, while Nick Spolec has nine goals and 10 assists.

In goal, Gustavus Adolphus has looked to Jack Killian with a 2.22 goals against average in 10 games, while Andrew Knobel Piehl has a 4.16 goals against average in six games.

#7 Minnesota State
The Mavericks enter the tournament with an 8-7-1 mark. The Golden Eagles played Minnesota State November 12 and 13 and earned a tie and a loss against the Mavericks. Minnesota State has been led this season by Ryan Quaintance with 14 goals and five assists. Dominic Valento has five goals and 10 assists, while Alex Zejdlik comes in with nine goals and two assists.

In goal, Connor Hayden has a 3.90 goals against average in six games, while William Johnson has a 4.56 goals against average in six games.

#1 Minnesota
The Golden Gophers are the top seed with a 20-2-2 WCCHA mark. The Golden Eagles split with Minnesota November 19 and 20. Minnesota has been propelled by Max Boll with 23 goals and 29 assists. Shane Griffin has been crucial offensively with 21 goals and 21 assists. William Kopka comes into the weekend with 17 goals and 15 assists, while Adam Weiner has four goals and 23 assists.

In between the pipes, Zach Walker leads the way with a 2.18 goals against average in 12 games. Chase Kvaal has a 3.55 goals against average in 10 games.

#8 St. Cloud State
St. Cloud State comes into the tournament with a 9-9-2 WCCHA record. The Huskies and the Golden Eagles split their series January 28 and 29. St. Cloud State looks to Alec Will with 17 goals and 15 assists. Riley Dixon comes into the weekend with 16 goals and 11 assists. Noah Bissett has 12 goals and 15 assists. Jacob Pirkl leads the Huskies this season with 17 assists.

In goal, Eric Schmidley leads the way with a 4.15 goals against average in 18 games this season.

#4 Wisconsin
The Badgers enter the weekend with an 11-4-1 WCCHA record. Wisconsin has been propelled by Parker Storck with 19 goals and seven assists. Jacob Feldt leads the Badgers with 19 assists this season. John Simon has been an offensive weapon with seven goals and 15 assists, while Ty Bailey has 10 goals and seven assists.

In between the pipes, Sean Goss has a 2.58 goals against average in 14 games this season.

#5 Saint Thomas
Saint Thomas enters the tournament with an 8-7-1 mark. Justin Johnson leads the way for their squad with 13 goals and 15 assists. In addition, Grant Horsager comes in with seven goals and 15 assists. Josh Hermes has 11 goals and four assists for the season, while Nick Davison has three goals and 12 assists.

In goal, Sam Haupfear has a 3.36 goals against average in 11 games.
