UMary Wins Overtime Thriller Over Minnesota Crookston in Final Seconds 72-70

CROOKSTON, Minn. – Lexie Schneider found Reese Wishart for the decisive basket in the final seconds of overtime to send the University of Mary to a 72-70 win over the University of Minnesota Crookston women's basketball team Friday, February 4 at Gary Senske Court at Lysaker Gymnasium. UMN Crookston forced overtime with a last second three-pointer as Kylie Post (Sr., G, Corcoran, Minn.) found Emma Carpenter (Jr., G, Eagan, Minn.), who hit the shot in the final seconds of regulation to tie the game 60-60. The last second UMary win marks the second of the season for the Marauders who won the game December 18, 2021 on a last second bucket from Schneider.

Minnesota Crookston dropped to 1-17 (0-12 NSIC) with Friday's loss. UMary improved to 12-13 (6-10 NSIC) with the victory.

Minnesota Crookston was led on the game by Post, who had 25 points on 8-of-16 from the field and 9-of-10 from the charity stripe, one of her best performances of her career at the free throw line. Post fell just two points shy of her career high of 27 points set against Bemidji State University December 7, 2021. Bren Fox (R-Jr., F/C, Norwood Young America, Minn.) chipped in a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds. Carpenter added 13 points, while Jes Mertens (So., G, Devils Lake, N.D.) had nine points and seven boards. Haylee Wheeler (So., F/C, Lakeville, Minn.) played the first game of her 2021-22 season and had six rebounds.

The Golden Eagles shot 24-of-69 from the field for 34.8 percent. UMN Crookston hit just one three-point shot, going 1-of-14. The only trey was the last second shot in regulation from Carpenter. Minnesota Crookston was strong at the foul line, going 21-of-24 for 87.5 percent. Minnesota Crookston won the rebounding edge 45-40, including 12 offensive rebounds.

The Marauders were guided by a double-double of 25 points and 10 rebounds from Schneider. Macy Williams added 14 points. Megan Voit finished with 13 points and five rebounds, while Ryleigh Wacha had 12 points and four boards.

UMary shot 26-of-64 from the field for 40.6 percent. The Marauders were 4-of-18 from beyond the arc for 22.2 percent, and 16-of-21 from the charity stripe for 76.2 percent. UMary committed 17 turnovers Friday.

The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 6-0 advantage propelled by four points from Fox. UMN Crookston pushed their lead to 13-6 after a bucker from Post with 4:21 left in the first quarter. UMary trimmed the deficit to 14-13 after an old-fashioned three-point play from Schneider with 1:36 remaining in the stanza. The Golden Eagles went into the break with a 16-15 lead.

The Marauders overtook UMN Crookston 18-16 using a Julia Fitterer jumper and a free throw from Williams. Minnesota Crookston countered with a 4-0 run as a Post basket gave the Golden Eagles a 20-18 advantage. UMary knotted the game up 20-20 on a Wacha bucket. However, Minnesota Crookston came back with a 5-0 run as a Carpenter and-one opportunity gave the Golden Eagles a 25-20 lead. UMN Crookston went into the locker room with a 31-25 advantage.

Minnesota Crookston held on to a 37-30 lead after a pair of free throws from Fox with 7:16 remaining in the third quarter. The Golden Eagles kept their advantage at seven (41-34) following a Post fast-break bucket. Back-to-back Megan Voit treys brought UMary within one (41-40) with 4:49 remaining in the stanza. Minnesota Crookston ended the quarter on an 8-3 run to go into the quarter break up 49-44.

The Marauders opened the fourth quarter on a 6-0 run as a Schneider bucket gave UMary a 50-49 lead. The Golden Eagles fought back with a 4-0 run as a basket from Post gave Minnesota Crookston a 53-50 advantage. UMary knotted the game back up 53-53 after a pair of free throws from Schneider with 4:33 remaining in the game. The Golden Eagles pushed out to a 57-54 advantage after a pair of free throws from Post. The Marauders came right back with a 6-0 run as a pair of Voit free throws put UMary up 60-57 with three seconds left. The Golden Eagles got the ball into Post right over half court and she found Carpenter for the three-pointer to force overtime with the game knotted up 60-60.

The teams traded baskets the entirety of the overtime period. Minnesota Crookston tied the game up 70-70 on a Mertens bucket with 27 seconds remaining. However, UMary won the game on the final possession, as Schneider dished off to Wishart at the hoop, and she converted to pick up the 72-70 victory.

UMN Crookston will remain at home to face Minot State University Saturday, February 5 at 3:30 p.m. at Gary Senske Court at Lysaker Gymnasium in Crookston, Minn.
