ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Minnesota Crookston women's basketball team used a fourth quarter run to capture a 79-73 victory over Northern State University Saturday, February 12 at Wachs Arena in Aberdeen, S.D. The Golden Eagles went on an 18-0 run and held the Wolves scoreless for over six minutes in the fourth quarter.
The Golden Eagles have captured their last two wins. The victory was the first for Minnesota Crookston at Wachs Arena since January 5, 2013. The Golden Eagles had three-straight wins in Aberdeen from February 5, 2011 through January 5, 2013. Minnesota Crookston improved to 3-17 (2-12 NSIC) with the victory. Northern State dropped to 11-13 (8-11 NSIC) with Saturday's loss.
The Golden Eagles were lifted by 17 points off the bench from
Abi Fraaza (Fr., F, Birnamwood, Wis.), who went 7-of-15 from the field.
Emma Carpenter (Jr., G, Eagan, Minn.) added 15 points and five assists for the game.
Mary Burke (Sr., F, Virginia, Minn.) chipped in 14 points and five boards, while
Bren Fox (R-Jr., F/C, Norwood Young America, Minn.) had 13 points.
Alex Page (Fr., F, Grand Forks, N.D.) paced the Golden Eagles with seven rebounds off the bench.
Minnesota Crookston shot 29-of-57 from the field for 50.9 percent. The Golden Eagles were 11-of-17 from beyond the arc for 64.7 percent. They shot 10-of-14 for 71.4 percent from the foul stripe. UMN Crookston had the edge on the glass 29-25.
Northern State was guided by 25 points from Kailee Oliverson. Lexie Roe added 17 points. Haley Johnson added 12 points, while Reanna Fillipi had 11 points.
The Wolves shot 30-of-60 from the field for 50.0 percent. Northern State shot 6-of-18 from distance for 33.3 percent. They were 7-of-10 from the line for 70.0 percent.
Northern State opened up the game on a 4-0 run after an Oliverson bucket. Leach had the answer for the Golden Eagles with a triple from the wing to pull within 4-3. Minnesota Crookston knotted the game up 6-6 as Fox converted an old-fashioned three-point play. The Golden Eagles took the lead 9-6 as Burke drained a three-pointer with 7:12 left in the first quarter. Northern State took the lead back 10-9 when Laurie Rogers found Fillipi at the hoop for a pair. Minnesota Crookston knotted the tilt back up with a
Jes Mertens (So., G, Devils Lake, N.D.) trey with 3:25 left in the stanza. The two teams traded baskets until a Roe bucket pushed the score out to 20-16 with under a minute left in the quarter. The Golden Eagles trimmed the deficit to 20-18 with a Fraaza bucket.
The Wolves pushed out to a 22-18 advantage early in the second quarter with a Rogers bucket. Minnesota Crookston responded with a 10-1 run propelled by six points from Fraaza as the Golden Eagles took the 28-23 lead. Minnesota Crookston held a 30-25 advantage after a Post jumper. Northern State countered with an 8-0 run as an Oliverson free throw put the Wolves ahead 33-30 with 5:12 remaining in the quarter. Minnesota Crookston knotted up the score 33-33 as Post drained a triple. The two teams would be tied up 35-35, before Northern State's Fillipi drained a triple with 3:14 left in the quarter. Carpenter had the answer this time, as she banked a three-pointer to tie the game up 38-38. The two teams traded buckets until the Golden Eagles were able to take the 43-40 advantage on a Carpenter three-pointer with just over a minute left in the half. Minnesota Crookston went into the locker room with a 43-42 lead.
Northern State opened the third quarter on a 6-0 run paced by triples from Oliverson and Fillipi, as they took the 48-43 lead. Minnesota Crookston finally got on the scoreboard with a Fox jumper to trim the deficit to 48-45. However, HalJohnson fired another trey, as the Wolves pushed out to a 51-45 lead. Minnesota Crookston cut the deficit down to two (51-49) after a Fraaza put-back. Northern State jumped out to a 58-49 advantage as Oliverson hit an and-one opportunity with 5:51 left in the quarter. The Wolves extended their lead to 64-49 with 4:08 left in the stanza. Minnesota Crookston stopped the 13-0 run with a Fraaza three-pointer. The Golden Eagles pulled to within 68-55 on a Fox jumper going into the quarter break.
Minnesota Crookston cut the deficit to 71-60 early in the fourth quarter on a Burke three-pointer. The Golden Eagles built on their momentum as it turned into an 11-0 run for UMN Crookston. Minnesota Crookston pulled within 71-68 on a Mertens trey. The Golden Eagles turned their run to 14-0 as Burke sank a trey from the top of the arc to knot the game up 71-71. Minnesota Crookston took the lead back 73-71 as Post drained a pair from the foul line. The Golden Eagles widened the gap to 75-71 on a Fraaza bucket, moving their run to 18-0. Northern State hit their first bucket over six minutes as Oliverson put in a pair to trim the deficit to 75-73. Fraaza responded with a crucial hoop to extend the lead to 77-73. Minnesota Crookston got a big steal on the defensive end, leading to a Burke lay-up to give the Golden Eagles the 79-73 lead with 20 seconds remaining. The Golden Eagles would come away with the 79-73 victory.
Minnesota Crookston will look to build off their momentum Sunday, February 13 at Minnesota State University Moorhead at 1 p.m.
