MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.– The University of Minnesota Crookston women's basketball team opened up the 2021-22 season with a 78-33 loss to the University of Minnesota Sunday, October 31 at Williams Arena in Minneapolis, Minn. The game was an opportunity for the Golden Eagles to play against some of the best competition in the country as they went up against the Big Ten squad.
Minnesota Crookston was guided by
Bren Fox (R-Jr., F/C, Norwood Young America, Minn.), who had 11 points and six rebounds.
Abigail Leach (Jr., G/F, Wyoming, Minn.) made her Golden Eagle debut with eight points off the bench.
Alex Page (Fr., F, Grand Forks, N.D.) had four points in her UMN Crookston opener, while
Veronica Schwartz (Jr., G/F, Parkers Prairie, Minn.) chipped in three points.
The Golden Eagles were 6-of-7 from the charity stripe for 85.7 percent. UMN Crookston went 12-of-56 from the field for 21.4 percent and 3-of-16 from beyond the arc for 18.8 percent. Minnesota shot 32-of-73 from the field for 43.8 percent. The Golden Gophers were 8-of-24 for 33.3 percent from behind the three-point line. Minnesota was 6-of-8 from the foul line for 75.0 percent.
The Golden Gophers out-rebounded UMN Crookston by the tune of 54-33. Minnesota Crookston had 26 turnovers, while they helped force 20 turnovers by the Golden Gophers.
Minnesota was paced by 17 points from Gadiva Hubbard. She was 5-of-9 from beyond the arc. Sara Scalia and Kadiatou Sissoko each added 13 points. Sissoko and Jasmine Powell led the Golden Gophers with seven rebounds apiece. Powell and Alexia Smith each had four assists.
The game saw father and daughter on opposite sidelines as long-time UMN Crookston Head Coach
Mike Roysland matched up against his daughter Kelly (Roysland) Curry, who is in her second stint as an assistant coach for her alma mater Minnesota. She works on the staff for Head Coach Lindsay Whalen.
Minnesota Crookston will continue their preseason tune-ups with another opportunity against a NCAA Division I program as they take on the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, N.D. Thursday, November 4 at 7 p.m.
