Minnesota Crookston Unable to Overcome Shooting Woes in 59-47 Loss to Minot State

MINOT, N.D. – The University of Minnesota Crookston women's basketball team shot just 26.7 percent from the field as they fell 59-47 at the MSU Dome in Minot, N.D. to Minot State University. The Golden Eagles pulled to within four (49-45) mid-way through the fourth quarter but they were unable to overcome their shooting woes as they fell to the Beavers.
 
Minnesota Crookston falls to 2-6 (2-4 NSIC) with Saturday's loss. Minot State improves to 2-4 (2-2 NSIC).

Key Players
The Golden Eagles were led by the play of Kylie Post (Jr., G, Corcoran, Minn.) with 12 points on 6-of-10 from the field. Post added five steals on the game. Jes Mertens (Fr., G, Devils Lake, N.D.) chipped in 11 points and nine rebounds, while Haylee Wheeler (Fr., F, Lakeville, Minn.) added nine points off the bench.

Minot State was paced by 27 points on 11-of-15 from the field by Amber Stevahn. Haley Hillenbrand added 12 points, while Bethany Theodore had 11 points and five steals.

Key Stats
The Golden Eagles were 16-of-60 for 26.7 percent from the field. It is the second-straight game where they struggled from the field. Minnesota Crookston went 2-of-15 for 13.3 percent from beyond the arc. The Golden Eagles were strong from the charity stripe, going 13-of-16 for 81.3 percent.

Minnesota Crookston struggled on the glass with Minot State winning the edge 42-25 with 10 offensive rebounds.

Minot State finished the game 21-of-53 for 39.6 percent. The Beavers were 1-of-12 for 8.3 percent from beyond the arc and 16-of-17 for 94.1 percent from the foul line. Minot State struggled with turnovers as they finished with 18 for the game.

Key Runs
UMN Crookston got out to a 4-1 advantage after a basket from Post. Minot State responded with a 10-0 run as Theodore found Hildenbrand in the paint for two to give the beavers an 11-4 advantage. The Golden Eagles pulled to within 13-8 with a Wheeler jumper with 1:12 remaining in the first quarter. Minot State went into the quarter break with a 15-8 lead after Lucy Chapman found Stevahn for the deuce late in the first quarter.

Minnesota Crookston came out with a great pace early in the second quarter. The Golden Eagles used a 9-0 run to take the 17-15 lead guided by five points from Julia Peplinski (Jr., F/C, Hustisford, Wis.). The Beavers responded with an 8-0 run as two free throws from Hildenbrand put the score at 23-17 in favor of Minot State. The Beavers went into the half with a 25-21 advantage.

The Golden Eagles came out of the locker room and pulled within two with a Post bucket. However, Minot State responded as a 5-0 rally led by a Stevahn old-fashioned three-point play put the score at 30-23. UMN Crookston had two straight solid possessions as Post got two and Burke found the net on a trey off the turnover to trim the deficit to 30-28. Minot State then utilized a 9-1 run to take the 39-29 lead on a Hildenbrand jumper. The Beavers went into the quarter break up 43-34.

Minot State pushed their lead to 12 at 47-35 as Stevahn continued her big night. The Golden Eagles had a push with a 6-0 run paced by four points from Mertens to trim the lead to 47-41 with 6:44 remaining. Minnesota Crookston would make one final push in the game as a bucket from Post cut the lead to four with 5:19 remaining. Minot State came back with a 6-0 run to take a 55-45 lead. The Golden Eagles were unable to overcome the double-digit deficit down the stretch as they fell 59-47.
