CROOKSTON, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Crookston women's soccer team defended well Sunday afternoon in their season debut against a strong Michigan Tech University side. However, the Golden Eagles were able to create just two shots on goal, while the Huskies utilized nine shots on goal to generate two goals in a 2-0 win over Minnesota Crookston.
The Golden Eagles were represented by a strong contingent of fans who took in the long-awaited debut to 2019 for Minnesota Crookston. The tilt was also the debut for Head Coach
Kyle Halfpop. The Golden Eagles fall to 0-1 with Sunday's loss, while Michigan Tech moves to 2-1-1.
Minnesota Crookston was strong in their half, but were unable to connect opportune passes in Michigan Tech's half.
Michigan Tech had the first scoring chance in the first minute on an attempt by Jesse Jacobusse saved by
Athena DiMario Done (Jr., GK, Windsor, Ontario).
The Golden Eagles countered with an opportunity in the seventh minute from
Vanessa Shelton (Jr., MF, Tacoma, Wash.).
Michigan Tech capitalized on their next opportunity as Stephanie Yeager dribbled the ball up after the Huskies had gotten a takeaway in their half of the field. She played the ball to the left side where she found Gabby Sgambati. Sgambati took the ball in and won a contest with DiMario Done and placed the ball into the right side of the net to put the Huskies ahead 1-0 in the 11
th minute.
The Golden Eagles had an opportunity to answer with a chance later in the 11
th minute by
Paige Pettit (Sr., D, St. Michael, Minn.).
Michigan Tech would get the next opportunity in the 32
nd minute as Grace Shaw put one on net but DiMario Done got the save.
The last scoring chance for the Huskies came in the 41
st minute of the first half as Maisy Snyder had a chance, but DiMario Done again put the ball away.
The Huskies would go into the locker room with a 1-0 lead. Michigan Tech had nine overall shots in the first half with four hots on goal.
Minnesota Crookston had three shots with two shots on goal.
DiMario Done had three saves in the first half, while her counterpart Gracie VanLangevelde had two saves.
The Huskies had their first chance of the second half in the 59
th minute as both teams were able to keep the chances at bay in the first 14 minutes of the second stanza.
The first chance came as Hannah Loughlin put an attempt on net, but DiMario Done came away with the save.
The next opportunity for the Huskies came seven minutes later at the 65:23 mark as Maisy Snyder put on an attempt, but DiMario Done again shoved it aside to keep the score 1-0 in favor of Michigan Tech.
In the 75
th minute of play, Yeager had an opportunity, but DiMario Done again came up in a crucial spot to put away the save.
The Huskies had an opportunity in the 85
th minute as Alexis Shatrau's shot was put away by DiMario Done.
Just 35 seconds later, after a take away by Shatrau near midfield on the left side, Shatrau found Snyder who dribbled the ball in and took a shot from distance that was slightly deflected and went past DiMario Done to put Michigan Tech ahead 2-0.
The Golden Eagles played a solid second half, but they were unable to connect passes in key spots and generate offensive opportunities. Minnesota Crookston was held to no shots in the final 45 minutes as the Huskies prevailed 2-0.
Michigan Tech finished with 19 shots with nine of them on goal. Minnesota Crookston tallied three shots with two shots on net.
The Huskies were guided by Snyder, who had three shots on goal on the game, and one goal. Sgambati's only shot on goal went for a goal, while Grace Shaw had four shots and one shot on goal.
Minnesota Crookston's shots were tallied by Shelton, Pettit, and
Jessica Withrow (Jr., MF/F, Hendersonville, Nev.).
DiMario Done allowed two goals with seven saves in the loss, while VanLangevelde had two saves in the shutout.
Minnesota Crookston is set to open NSIC play Fri., Sept. 20 at 6 p.m. at University of Minnesota Duluth in Duluth, Minn.
