MSU Moorhead Fends Off Late Charge for Minnesota Crookston in 2-1 Loss for Golden Eagles

CROOKSTON, Minn. – The University of Minnesota Crookston soccer team battled until the final whistle Sun., Nov. 3 in a 2-1 loss to Minnesota State University Moorhead. The Golden Eagles made the final four minutes of the game tense as Maggie Peterson (Jr., F, Princeton, Minn.) scored her second goal of the season in the 86th minute. The Golden Eagles tried to get the equalizer but MSU Moorhead came away with the 2-1 victory despite one of the best efforts for Minnesota Crookston of the 2019 season.

The Golden Eagles fall to 0-14 (0-13 NSIC) with Sunday's loss. MSU Moorhead improves to 6-6-4 (4-6-3 NSIC). MSU Moorhead is led by former Golden Eagle Christie (Chappell) Kopietz, who became the program's first-ever soccer player in the Athletic Hall of Fame earlier this Fall.

Minnesota Crookston had five shots with three shots on goal, compared to 16 overall shots for the Dragons with seven shots on goal. The Golden Eagles were just shy in corner kicks with four attempted to MSU Moorhead's five. Minnesota Crookston won the possession battle in the first half, and was close in the second half as they were able to keep the ball and string together passes that posed a threat against their opposition. The Golden Eagles have continued to show improvement throughout the season in Head Coach Kyle Halfpop's first year with the program.

Minnesota Crookston was led by the play of Peterson, who scored her second goal of the 2019 season. Peterson had four shots with three shots on goal. Samantha Donnay (Fr., MF, Princeton, Minn.) picked up her second assist of the season, as she connected with her fellow former Princeton Tiger. Jacqueline Burke (Sr., D, Anchorage, Alaska) also had a shot for the Golden Eagles.

MSU Moorhead was guided by Kaylee Parsons with one goal on four shots with three shots on goal. Lindsey Brownell added a goal on two shots with one shot on goal. Jensen Odegaard chipped in an assist for the Dragons.

MSU Moorhead got on the scoreboard first, as they scored after a stream of shots in the box. Brownell put away the goal after Odegaard had a shot that was blocked.

The Golden Eagles had a strong chance near the top of the box in the 28th minute, but Peterson's attempt was saved by Kayleigh Sedlacek.

Parsons had an attempt on goal for the Dragons in the 31st minute, but her shot was put away by Athena DiMario Done. MSU Moorhead went into the break up 1-0.

Parsons had a chance early in the second half that was saved by DiMario Done.

Minnesota Crookston had a shot that was wide from Burke in the 56th minute.

The Golden Eagles had a shot from Peterson that was blocked in the 62nd minute as they looked to continue to find the equalizer.

Soon after, Parsons found the net on a rocket off the free kick for the Dragons.

Jacie Osier had another chance for the Dragons that was saved by DiMario Done in the 77th minute.

Rodgers came out of the goal for the Dragons to contend with a threat from Donnay in the corner, but she went back into net, but not before Peterson was able to get off a shot into the left corner of the goal to cut the deficit to 2-1.

DiMario Done had five saves and two goals allowed in 90 minutes. With her five saves, she ties her former teammate Olivia Puttin for fifth all-time in career saves.
