Minnesota Crookston Soccer Falls 4-0 to Southwest Minnesota State in Marshall

Box Score MARSHALL, Minn. – Southwest Minnesota State University utilized two goals in each half to upend University of Minnesota Crookston 4-0 at Mattke Field at the Schwan Regional Event Center in Marshall, Minn. The Mustangs were led by two goals from Alli Miskowiec. The Golden Eagles created opportunities as they had six shots and four shots on goal, including a penalty kick by Katie Emmett (Jr., D/MF, Bohermeen, Ireland) in the first half. However, they were unable to find the back of the net on the day.

Minnesota Crookston falls to 0-6 (0-5 NSIC) with Friday's loss. Southwest Minnesota State improves to 6-1 (4-1 NSIC).

The Golden Eagles were led by three shots with two shots on goal from Mataya Mierzejewski (So., MF/F, Woodbury, Minn.). Emmett added two shots on goal, while Vanessa Shelton (Jr., MF/F, Tacoma, Wash.) added one shot.

Southwest Minnesota State was led by two goals from Miskowiec, while Abby Hoisington and Alex Lotts each added a goal. Hoisington chipped in an assist, as did Miskowiec. Hoisington led the Mustangs with four shots. Miskowiec had three shots on goal for Southwest Minnesota State.
Minnesota Crookston was strong in the first 20 minutes of Friday's contest as they were able to create offense on Southwest Minnesota State's side.

The Mustangs had the first chance of the game in the second minute on a shot on goal from Miskowiec, but Athena DiMario Done (Jr., GK, Windsor, Ontario) slammed the door on Miskowiec.

SMSU created another chance with a shot on goal by Allie Cook in the 13th minute, but DiMario Done again turned the opportunity away.

Minnesota Crookston got their first shot on goal as Mierzejewski put the opportunity on net but Amanda Haimes picked up the save.

Soon after, the Mustangs got a steal on Minnesota Crookston's side of the field and Abbey Hoisington put her shot in the back of the net to put SMSU ahead 1-0 in the 21st minute.

Southwest Minnesota State capitalized soon after in the 23rd minute as the ball hit off Miskowiec's shoulder off a Hoisington corner and the ball went past DiMario Done to extend the lead to 2-0.

The Mustangs had three shots on goal in the stretch right after the goals, but DiMario Done came away with the saves.

Minnesota Crookston had a phenomenal opportunity after a Yellow Card was offered to Erin Fisher in the box. Emmett took the penalty kick for the Golden Eagles. Emmett went low left with the shot, and so did Haimes as she turned away the chance to keep the lead 2-0 for Southwest Minnesota State.
The Mustangs would hang on for the 2-0 lead going into the break.

The Golden Eagles held possession for 48 percent of the game compared to 52 percent for Southwest Minnesota State.

Minnesota Crookston had two shots on goal, while Southwest Minnesota State had 11 shots with seven shots on goal. The Golden Eagles won four corners in the first half, which is the most corner kicks Minnesota Crookston has attempted this season. Southwest Minnesota State had three corner kicks in the opening stanza.
The Golden Eagles had shots on goal from Mierzejewski and Emmett. The Mustangs were led by three shots with one shot on goal from Hoisington. Lotts had two shots with one shot on goal.

DiMario Done had five saves in the first half, while Haimes notched two saves.

Minnesota Crookston limited Southwest Minnesota State to just one shot on goal in the first 11 minutes of the second half.

Southwest Minnesota State lifted the lid on the scoring in the second stanza as Miskowiec put away the goal after Hoisington's shot hit off the crossbar for the Mustangs. The goal extended the lead to 3-0.

The Golden Eagles had their first opportunity of the second half with a Vanessa Shelton shot wide right in the 62nd minute.

Minnesota Crookston had another chance soon after as Mierzejewski put one off target in the 63rd minute.

Southwest Minnesota State transitioned to their half of the field quickly as Lotts got the ball past DiMario Done and put it to the left side of the goal to extend the lead to 4-0.

DiMario Done had a save off a shot on a free kick by Olivia Harriger.

The Golden Eagles had another opportunity as Mierzejewski put a shot on frame in the 75th minute, but Haimes was able to corral the save.

Minnesota Crookston won a corner in the 77th minute, but were not able to get a shot off the opportunity.

Erin Fisher had a shot on target for the Mustangs in the 78th minute but DiMario Done was able to punch the shot away.

Minnesota Crookston had another opportunity in the 80th minute as Emmett put an opportunity on target off a free kick from 45 yards out.

The Golden Eagles were unable to make up the difference the rest of the way as they fell 4-0 to the Mustangs.

Minnesota Crookston returns to action Sun., Oct. 6 at 1 p.m., against University of Sioux Falls in Sioux Falls, S.D. The game will be a reunion for Head Coach Kyle Halfpop, who was an assistant coach at University of Sioux Falls up until this summer.
