Minnesota Crookston Shows Fight in Four-Set Loss to No. 12 Southwest Minnesota State

Marshall, Minn.—After losing two matches in a row, the Golden Eagles were looking to get back on track on the road at No. 12 Southwest Minnesota State.
 
It was a wild match, but the Mustangs prevailed in four sets over the Golden Eagles, three sets to one (13-25, 17-25, 27-25, 14-25).
 
Minnesota Crookston falls to 4-15 overall (2-9 NSIC). No. 12 SMSU improves to 13-6 overall and 7-4 in the NSIC.

Set One
The Golden Eagles fell behind early on in the match, but Lauren Wallace (R-So., OH, Bloomington, Minn.) continued her strong weekend with a kill to get the Golden Eagles on the board.
 
The Mustangs took a 7-2 lead, before the Golden Eagles scored three on a row, helped by a Sydney Kruisselbrink (Jr., S, Rochester, Minn.) and Porsha Porath (So., OH, Windom, Minn.) kills.
 
The match would stay competitive throughout the entire set. The Mustangs led 17-12, which forced a Golden Eagles timeout.
 
Following the Sarah Rauen timeout, the Mustangs scored three straight which forced another Minnesota Crookston timeout.
 
The Golden Eagles would try to chip away at the lead, but the ranked Mustangs proved to be too much for the Golden Eagles in set one, winning 25-13.
 
Set Two
In set two, Southwest Minnesota State jumped out to a fast 9-4 start. Minnesota Crookston would make the Mustang lead 10-6 after a Porath kill.
 
With the Mustangs leading 11-6, a long rally resulted in a Porath kill, which was followed by a Kruisselbrink ace and a Mustang error to cut the Mustang lead to 11-9.
 
The Golden Eagles would tie the set up at 12 after a Meli Rodriguez (Sr., MH, Sarchi, Costa Rica) block. The maroon and gold would tie things up again at 13 after a Wallace kill.
 
The Mustangs would stretch their lead to 19-14, but Deaira Gresham (Jr., OH, Maplewood, Minn.) tried to get her team back in the set with a kill just inside the back line to make it 19-15, in favor of the Mustangs.
 
The Mustangs were able to hold of the Golden Eagles, to win the second set, 25-17.
 
Set Three
The third set opened up with a wild rally that saw the Golden Eagles get the first point of the third set with a kill from Gresham.
 
The third set would prove to be a wild one. The set would go back and forth, before the Golden Eagles took a 14-12 lead after a Porath kill on a free ball and a big block from Wallace and Rodriguez.
 
The Mustangs would storm back to take a 15-14 lead.
 
Once again, these two teams would go back and forth. The third set would see a whopping 21 ties and the Golden Eagles would finish off No. 12 Southwest Minnesota State 27-25 after another Gresham kill, her sixth of the match.
 
Set Four
After the third set, it was no shock to see the fourth set go back and forth. Through the first 15 points, the biggest lead both teams had was two.
 
The Mustangs gained some separation to take an 11-7 lead, which forced the first Golden Eagles timeout of set four.
 
The Mustangs would lead 14-7, before a Kruisselbrink kill and a Mustang error cut the lead to 14-9.
 
Minnesota Crookston would force a Mustang timeout after a Rodriguez kill cut the Mustang lead to 20-14.
 
Out of the timeout, the Mustangs would score the final five points to win the fourth set 25-14 and the match, three sets to one.
 
Minnesota Crookston is back at home next weekend to host Wayne State and Augustana. First serve with the Wildcats is set for 6 p.m., on Friday night inside Lysaker Gymnasium.
