Crookston, Minn.—It was a cold, windy, and at times, snowy Friday afternoon in the upper Northwest, as the Minnesota Crookston women's soccer team kicked off homecoming weekend with a match against Southwest Minnesota State University.
Minnesota Crookston was looking to continue the momentum from last weekend where they got a win and a tie.
Southwest Minnesota State would score three unanswered goals after the halftime break to leave Crookston with an NSIC victory, 4-1.
The Mustangs got off to a hot start in the cold weather. Abbey Hoisington would take a pass from Lexi Smith from the right side of the field, and shoot it high past Golden Eagle goalkeeper
Athena DiMario Done. (So., Windsor, Ontario)
Much like they did last weekend, the Golden Eagles would battle back, and would get the tying goal at the 13' minute of the first half. Sophomore
Vanessa Shelton (Tacoma, Wash.) would take a Mustang turnover, and deposit it over Jenna Meyer's left shoulder for the goal, and the first of the season for Shelton.
The game would be tied at the halftime break. The second half is where the Mustangs would put pressure on Minnesota Crookston.
The Mustangs would have 17 shots in the second half, but DiMario Done was strong until Abbey Hoisington would break the tie as she would get the pass in the box from Cassidy Erickson for a 2-1 Mustang lead. That goal was Hoisington's second goal of the game, and fifth of the year.
That goal would be more than enough for the Mustangs, as they would add on two more goals from Alexandra Miskowiec, and Alex Harmdierks for a 4-1 victory.
Athena Dimario Done was solid in goal, making 18 saves on the day, from 28 Mustang shots.
Southwest Minnesota State would outshoot the Golden Eagles 28-5, and would also have two more corner kicks than Minnesota Crookston on the afternoon.
Alexandra Miskowiec finished the day with seven shots, and two points on the day, while Abbey Hoisington was a key part of the SMSU offensive attack with seven shots and three points.
For Minnesota Crookston,
Vanessa Shelton led the way with two shots, and one goal.
Shonali Pierce (So., Streamwood, Ill.) and
Jessica Scott (Sr. Post Falls, Idaho) would each finish with one shot on the day.
The loss for Minnesota Crookston drops their record to 1-7-1 overall, and 1-4-1 in the NSIC. The win for SMSU boosts their record to 3-5 overall, and 3-3 in the NSIC.
The Golden Eagles will be back in action to wrap up homecoming weekend on campus when they host the University of Sioux Falls on Sunday afternoon. That match is set for 1 p.m. on the Minnesota Crookston Soccer field.
