Odor's Career-Night Guides Golden Eagles to Regular-Season Ending Win Over U-Mary 72-67

BISMARCK, N.D. – The University of Minnesota Crookston women's basketball team ended the regular-season on a two-game win streak as they upended University of Mary 72-67 at the McDowell Activity Center Sat., Feb. 17 in Bismarck, N.D. The Golden Eagles looked to a career-high 25 points from Isieoma Odor (R-Jr., F/C, Bloomington, Minn.), who was 10-of-20 from the field. She made it a double-double on the night with 14 boards. Odor put together one of the strongest weekends of her career as she averaged a double-double of 22.5 points and 10.5 rebounds in two games in North Dakota.

Minnesota Crookston concludes the regular season with an 8-18 (8-14 NSIC) mark. The Golden Eagles ended the season with a 7-9 mark as they continued to show improvement since Dec. 31, 2017. Minnesota Crookston picked up the sweep of U-Mary on the season. The Marauders end the regular-season with a 13-15 (9-13 NSIC) record.

The Golden Eagles will open the NSIC/Sanford Health Tournament Wed., Feb. 21 as they will be the No. 7 seed in the NSIC North and travel to face the No. 2 seed in the NSIC South Wayne State College (Neb.). The game will be in Wayne, Neb., with an expected start time at 7 p.m. More details will be released when the information is official.

In addition to Odor, Abby Guidinger (Fr., G/F, Waukesha, Wis.) chipped in 19 points off the bench on 8-of-13 from the field. Caitlin Michaelis (Jr., G, Marshfield, Wis.) added 14 points on 4-of-6 from the field and 3-of-4 from beyond the arc. Micaela Noga (Sr., G, Parkers Prairie, Minn.) chipped in 10 points on the night. Noga surpassed Stephanie Mayclin for seventh all-time in scoring. She needs just seven points to move past current Southwest Minnesota State University assistant coach Brittani Wiese for sixth all-time. Emily Gruber (Sr., F/C, Monticello, Minn.) added 10 rebounds, while Noga had four assists.

Odor continues to close in on 1,000 points. She needs just 19 points to become the 12th player to reach 1,000 points in school history, joining her teammate Noga. Gruber is behind her as she needs 45 points to reach the mark.

The Golden Eagles shot 27-of-56 from the field for 48.2 percent. Minnesota Crookston was 5-of-13 from behind the three-point line for 38.5 percent. The Golden Eagles were strong from the stripe as they shot 13-of-16 for 81.3 percent.

Minnesota Crookston won the battle on the glass 34-31.

The Marauders were paced by a double-double of 23 points and 11 boards from Cassie Askvig. Gabbie Bohl added 14 points on just 6-of-17 from the field. Macy Williams chipped in 13 points on 5-of-8 from the field and 3-of-6 from beyond the arc. Lauren Royunda finished with 13 points and eight boards.

U-Mary was 27-of-59 from the field for 45.8 percent. The Marauders were 6-of-22 for 27.3 percent from beyond the arc and 7-of-9 for 77.8 percent from the stripe.

Minnesota Crookston lifted the lid on the scoring as Odor connected on a jumper from just inside the three-point arc. Macy Williams answered for the Marauders on the other end as she hit a triple from wing to put U-Mary up 3-2. The two teams would trade leads until U-Mary would move their advantage to 7-4 with a pair of Bohl free throws. A Rotunda pull-up jumper extended the Marauders lead to 9-4. Noga halted the run for U-Mary as she nailed a trey to pull the Golden Eagles back within 9-7.  The Marauders moved their lead out to 13-9 on a bucket from Askvig. Minnesota Crookston cut the deficit to 13-12 as Guidinger completed an old-fashioned three-point play with two minutes remaining in the first quarter. However, U-Mary staved off the charge for the moment as Macy Williams hit a trey from the wing to move the lead to 16-12. A Rotunda bucket made it a 5-0 run for the Marauders as they took the 18-12 lead. Odor hit two free throws and Noga got the steal and drove the court for a bucket to pull the Golden Eagles within 18-16 going into the quarter break.

Odor came out firing on all cylinders out of the hiatus as she scored the first five teams of the frame to put Minnesota Crookston up 21-18. Macy Williams responded for U-Mary with a three to make it even 21-21. The two squads traded baskets until Askvig used two-consecutive baskets to put the Marauders up 31-27 with 5:29 remaining in the half. The Golden Eagles quickly took the lead back using a 7-0 run propelled by four points from Odor as they went up 34-31. A pair of Askvig free throws cut the lead to 34-33. Minnesota Crookston came right back with an 8-0 run with four points from Guidinger as they went ahead 42-33. U-Mary closed out the half with an Askvig jumper as the Marauders pulled within 42-35.

Minnesota Crookston was paced by 18 first-half points from Odor. Guidinger added 11, while Noga chipped in eight.

A triple from Michaelis and a bucket from Odor got Minnesota Crookston off to a strong start in the third quarter as they took a 47-35 advantage. U-Mary responded with a 4-0 run with baskets from Askvig and Macy Williams to pull within 47-39. Michaelis stopped the run with a crucial triple to move the lead to 50-39 for Minnesota Crookston. Three-consecutive baskets from Guidinger extended the Golden Eagle lead to 60-43 with 30 seconds remaining in the frame. Askvig drained a triple to pull the Marauders within 60-46 going into the break.

The Marauders opened the fourth quarter on a 7-2 run as a Dani Williams trey cut the lead to 62-53. Guidinger halted the run for the Golden Eagles with a jumper in the paint to move the lead back out to 64-52. Michaelis moved the run to 4-0 for Minnesota Crookston as she drove the lane for a bucket to move the lead to 66-52. Marauders got four points on one possession in order to cut the lead back to 66-56. After a defensive stop, Rotunda then drained a three from the corner to slice into the deficit 66-59. Noga ended the 7-0 run for U-Mary as she hit a pair of free throws to move the advantage to 68-59 with 4:29 remaining in the game. The Marauders used a Bohl bucket to pull within seven points at 68-61. After a shot-clock violation for the Golden Eagles, U-Mary bot a bucket from Bohl to cut the lead to 68-63 with 50 seconds left. Michaelis hit 1-of-2 with 32.8 seconds remaining to extend the lead to 69-63. Rotunda got a quick basket for the Marauders with under 30 seconds left. That forced them to foul Michaelis again, where this time she helped ice the game with a pair of foul shots to move the lead to 71-65 with 26.9 seconds remaining. The Golden Eagles staved off U-Mary down the stretch to come away with the 72-67 win.

Minnesota Crookston will face Wayne State College (Neb.) Wed., Feb. 21 in Wayne, Neb. They are looking to extend their streak of appearances at the NSIC/Sanford Health Tournament to four. Seniors Gruber and Noga have been to the Sanford Pentagon in each of their seasons with the Golden Eagles, while Odor has played on the last two teams and was a redshirt the first season Minnesota Crookston made it to Sioux Falls, S.D.
