Minnesota Crookston Falls 3-0 in Final Road Match to Minot State

MINOT, N.D. – The University of Minnesota Crookston volleyball team kept it close Sat., Oct. 27 at Minot State University, but fell 3-0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-15) at the MSU Dome In Minot, N.D.

The Golden Eagles were within striking distance in both the first and second sets. In the final frame, Minnesota Crookston had 8-1 run late but it would be too late as they fell 25-15 to fall 3-0 in the match.
Minnesota Crookston falls to 4-22 (2-16 NSIC) with Saturday's loss. Minot State moves to 13-15 (6-12 NSIC) with the victory.

The Golden Eagles hit .061 with 27 kills and 20 errors. The Golden Eagles had a strong match defensively as they notched 15.3 digs per set. In addition, they tallied four service aces.

Minnesota Crookston was guided by Deaira Gresham (So., OH, Maplewood, Minn.) with eight kills and 15 digs. Lauren Wallace (R-Fr., OH, Bloomington, Minn.) chipped in six kills and hit .400 for the match, while Callie Schapekahm (Sr., MH, Eagan, Minn.) picked up five kills and hit .364. Sydney Kruisselbrink (So., S, Rochester, Minn.) paced the Golden Eagles with 25 assists. In addition to Gresham, Katie Lienemann (So., Lib., Rosemount, Minn.) led the way with 10 digs.

Minot State hit .211 with 45 kills and 21 errors. Shelby Spuller paced the Beavers with 22 kills and a .436 hitting percentage. Hayley Swain added six kills. Kelsey Dewulf led the Beavers with 37 assists, while Karli Koza notched 22 digs. Shae Pedersen tallied with 10 digs.

Minnesota Crookston opened up the first set on a strong note as they led 9-5 following a Schapekahm kill. The Beavers made a charge as they used an 8-1 run to overtake the lead 13-10 on a kill from Dufner. The Golden Eagles came right back with a 7-2 run as they took the lead back 17-16 with a Wallace kill. Minot State took the lead back but the Golden Eagles were within just one point 20-19. The Beavers closed out the first frame on a 5-3 run as they won the set 25-22 on a Spuller kill.

The Golden Eagles again came out of the gate strong as they led 5-4 with a Sabrina Leuer (R-Jr., OH, Hamel, Minn.) kill. Minot State took the lead over at 10-7. The Golden Eagles would keep within two points at 13-11 after a Beaver attack error. Minot State responded as they closed the frame out on a 12-7 run to take the set 25-18 to go ahead 2-0 on the match.

Minot State raced out to a 17-3 advantage in the third set. The Golden Eagles made a late run to cut the lead to 24-14 on a kill from Porsha Porath (Fr., OH, Windom, Minn.). However, a Kayla Verity kill put a stamp on the 25-14 set win and 3-0 match win for the Beavers.

Minnesota Crookston wrap up the 2018 season at home as they take on Northern State University Fri., Nov. 2 at 5 p.m., followed by Minnesota State University Moorhead Sat., Nov. 3 at 2 p.m.
